An Unhelpful Myth: Bums on Seats

Another Unhelpful Myth we need to call out is ‘We need bums on seats’.

The recurring vacancies and key roll vacancies, rolling from strategic window to the next, and the answer of ‘we need to be filling up these roles and just getting people in’, is becoming a real distraction, becoming a real risk from actually doing the harder strategy and leadership work.

Those who have been following the Spark Kindler Index conversations, probably can see where we're going with this.

It's becoming a bit like someone's been hurt at home and I'm running around the house looking for Band Aids and shouting out for the box of Band Aids, rather than actually getting back to where the person is and really getting involved in the specific situation.

In corporate terms, it's like not looking at the harsher realities of ‘are we addressing

our culture,

the strategy,

the systems

and perhaps even our purpose’?

In the coming week, what I suggest is pause and make space to ask, at the deepest level, am I a Seat Filler or a Spark Kindler.

Cheif Transformation Officers I have been working with are working on the multi-factor problem solving required in key industry vacancies such as Leadership, Engineers, Doctors/ Nurses/ Clinicians etc. These require solutions developed over multiple years. In some cases there is “repair” work from the unintended consequences of hastily filling roles through and following the Covid period. Curious where you may be seeing this too.
