An Unhelpful Myth: All FOR PURPOSE Organisations are Purpose-Led

An Unhelpful Myth is that all FOR PURPOSE organisations are purpose led.

Like most unhelpful myths, when we first hear it, it sounds quite reasonable.

But when we look a little closer, what do we hear?

There's ‘purpose led’ and there's ‘just happened to be here’.

It's a massive difference, and the difference of the spark, the passion for the purpose led is visible from the outside. You can see and feel the difference.

The first time I was really aware of this was growing up in the country and surrounded by gatherings of farmers, and I can picture it now, right? My brother, and a few of his mates, they had the spark for farming. They really were curious about markets, genetics, all of these things, and decades later, are still driving leading industry advancements.

?

In another part of the pub, there are people there that have inherited the farm and just really quite happy with the reliable income. Others that are really just dabbling in farming, farming now, mining later, just really anything that was going to maintain their lifestyle.

And then there's the classics. You can see them there. “How hard it is to work on the land. This industry is too tough. I don't know why anyone puts up with it. I wish I could get out of it.”

And they've been saying that for decades too.

This can happen in a FOR PURPOSE organisation, and it matters. It is the difference between a purpose led FOR PURPOSE and any plain old bureaucracy.

?

What I suggest in the coming week, don't look out the window on this, look in the mirror.

Am I connecting to my spark?

Am I surrounded by people who generate that spark?
