Unhappy with your remote job? Understand why.

Unhappy with your remote job? Understand why.

If you think that landing a remote job alone will guarantee you a happy and satisfying career, please keep reading.

When you’re on the verge of burnout in your current job, dealing with a micromanaging boss, or struggling with zero work-life balance, it’s natural to think that a new job is the solution to all your problems.

If the new job is remote, even better - because you’ll finally be able to live life on your own terms.

But what if this isn’t always true?

Important questions to consider:

  • Can a remote job alone solve all your career issues?
  • Are you setting unrealistic expectations that a remote job will drastically improve your quality of life?
  • What should you reasonably expect from a remote job?

- To help you find the answers, I want to share the story of one of my career coaching clients.

She landed a fully remote job a few years ago with a great salary. Initially, she was thrilled.

She could spend quality time with her family, pick up her kids from school, go to the gym almost daily, and eat healthier. But over time, things started to change.

After a few career coaching sessions with me, she realized her career needs had evolved. Aspects that were a priority for her three years ago no longer bring her the same happiness.

While the flexibility of a remote job remained important, new elements became essential.

Maybe you’re also feeling unsatisfied with your career and can’t pinpoint why.

Perhaps you already have a remote job, and while the ability to work from anywhere is still a “must-have,” something feels off.

Here are the 5 main reasons why you might stop enjoying your remote job:

  1. You don't like the job itself: The tasks or industry might not be appealing. The initial excitement of landing a remote job may have temporarily overshadowed these feelings, but maybe you didn’t like the job from the beginning.
  2. Struggling with “working from home” aspects: Missing human interaction, feeling stuck, or struggling with time management can all contribute to dissatisfaction.
  3. Changes in the company: A new boss, company merger, layoffs, or a mandatory return to office (RTO) can disrupt your work environment and reduce flexibility
  4. No value alignment with the company: Misalignment with the company’s values often becomes apparent over time, overshadowing a good salary or role-specific skills.
  5. Desire for a different career direction: As aspirations and interests evolve, your current role may feel limiting without opportunities for lateral moves or promotions.

Let me guess what you might be thinking right now:

"Oh Juliana, but it’s better to be bored with a remote job than an office job."

Well, perhaps you are right, but from my experience talking to professionals worldwide, job dissatisfaction is unsustainable – even with remote roles.

Having a job that meets your desired flexibility is important, but what else should you aim for?

Check this list of the aspects professionals prioritize most in a new job:

  • Growth opportunity
  • Respect and recognition
  • Fair salary (or improvement from the previous job)
  • Making an impact
  • Fulfillment
  • Efficient use of time

Not all of these aspects may resonate with your current career moment, and that’s perfectly fine - but it’s important to be aware of those aspects.

They might gain relevance at different stages in your career.

Ignoring these aspects or putting them aside "just because you have a remote job" can affect your career satisfaction sooner or later.
