Is it ungrateful to want more?

Is it ungrateful to want more?

What happens when you have everything you want and it's still not enough?

Here's the raw truth: society teaches us to have aspirations, not dreams.

Think back to childhood.

You dream of being a doctor, proudly wearing that tiny white coat and plastic stethoscope. You're adorable – but you're not a doctor.

What you are is a dreamer, and something magical happens: you receive overwhelming praise for that declaration.

Suddenly, you're not just a kid playing pretend – you're "the future first doctor in the family."

But you're four.

You still eat gummy bears off the floor.

Yet somehow, this moment becomes your destiny.

This is where the shift begins.

Children learn to shape their dreams around the reactions they receive. That pure, internal excitement gets replaced by a constant hunger for external validation.

When that same child later announces they want to be an arborist instead of a doctor, watch how quickly that shine of approval dims. "But... you were going to be our first doctor."

Over time, this subtle conditioning transforms our wildest dreams into carefully calculated aspirations.

We become professional "firsts" – first college graduate, first homeowner, first six-figure earner, first keynote speaker. The weight of these achievements becomes our identity, our cage of golden expectations.

Then comes what I call "first fatigue" – that soul-deep exhaustion where success feels hollow.

You're simultaneously bored and overwhelmed, overstimulated yet empty. It's the crossroads where you realize you're ready to break free from other people's expectations and reclaim your life's narrative. Your legacy. Your terms.

But how do you unravel decades of living for others? While I don't claim to have all the answers, I invite you to sit with these three questions:

  1. If nothing changes – if you stay exactly as you are – what's waiting for you five years down this path?
  2. Calculate the true cost of ignoring your intuition. What opportunities, joy, and potential are you sacrificing?
  3. By hoarding your dreams of impact, family time, location freedom, and authentic expression – what are you risking losing forever?

When you answer these questions with raw honesty, ask yourself: What's the first brave step you'll take beyond your comfort zone?

My step was hiring a coach – and yes, this was hard for someone who prided herself on being a professional "know-it-all."

I did know it all, but that knowledge had become my barrier. I spent months spinning in frustration, collecting rejections like badges of honor.

Then my coach helped me see the truth: I wasn't stuck. I simply hadn't started.

Together, we discovered that breaking free from expectations isn't about dramatic gestures. It's about small, courageous choices that align with your inner compass rather than your outer accolades.

Because sometimes having everything you thought you wanted is just the beginning of discovering what you truly need.

And if this message resonated with you, share it with someone who needs to hear it. Sometimes, one moment of truth can spark a lifetime of transformation.

I don’t feel that it is ungrateful to want more. I feel that if a person has worked hard to attain the skill set required for the position and desire to to make a career change. He/She should step out on faith, complete the application and submit other documents, and submit the application packet. My philosophy is if God didn’t want us to experience different things in life, he would not have enabled us to obtain the educational requirements of workforce skills. Never let anyone define you or doubt your self worth because God did not give us the spirit of fear. If you never put your name in the applicant pool you will never know if will receive the position. The sky is the limit but you have to stop letting others set boundaries for your life. You have to unlock your mind and believe all things are possible through Christ who strengthens us. Sincerely, Dr. Washington
