UNGA & Climate Week - a NYC Whirlwind

Hello Friends,

Phew - UNGA and Climate Week came and went like a whirlwind!

For those familiar with what happens in New York City during UN General Assembly / Climate Week each?September?- well it's a whirlwind to put it mildly.?

Obviously, it's not just about the traffic jams and dizzying array of meetings - it's about amazing networking, learning and sharing?on the headiest global topics of our times - from environment and geopolitics to human rights and technology.

I had the privilege to participate and/or speak at a variety of events some of which are?illustrated below with a photo and links to great resources.

The world has unfortunately gotten darker and more foreboding?over the past few weeks and months. Let's each do our part to make it less so. Until our next encounter, wishing you and yours safety and peace,?

Andrea

First, I am delighted to share Diplomatic Courier 's just published & freely accessible?UNGA week ebook "Summit for the Future: A Turning Point for the Global Goals" covering a variety of global topics - including my chapter which was about "What OpenAI Teaches Us About Fixing the Tech Culture Divide".?

Thanks as always to the great team there including Shane Szarkowski, PhD & Ana Carcani Rold !

As part of Climate Week, it was terrific to participate in the Ramboll / Ramb?ll Fonden / Ramboll Foundation / University of California, Berkeley roundtable on sustainability and capitalism discussing the future of capitalism from both a Nordics and US perspective. Thank you to our hosts including Lynsey Clarke Thomas Fr?yland S?ren Staugaard Nielsen ; a big shout out to my good friend Carolyn Kissane who did a great job moderating and to Robert Strand for excellent, thoughtful "provocations".

Attending and facilitating a roundtable on "AI and Global Regulatory Frameworks" at the United Nations Global Compact 2024 Leaders Summit was a true highlight of the week for me especially getting to talk about this topic with participants from New Zealand, Angola, Peru, Mexico, Finland, and Guinea.

A key take-away: except for the EU AI Act there is little to no AI regulation in most parts of the world and at best there are green shoots of self-regulation and then only in jurisdictions where there are corporates with resources and awareness of the topic.

This future-oriented, sustainability and technology focused day was made possible by the amazing team work of the Transformational Governance Think Lab team at the United Nations Global Compact including Gabriela Ocampo Ucha Hannah Ravani Joan Birika nathalie stadelmann and many others.

Thank you to them and to my dear friend Olajobi Makinwa without whom none of this would have been possible for me ??!

The United Nations Global Compact 20th Anniversary of Principle 10 ?? panels and celebration was indeed another highlight for me. Principle 10 on Anti-Corruption was added 4 years after the first 9 original Principles on environmental, human rights and worker rights.

As someone who has worked on anti-corruption programs - including creating, overseeing, researching and collaborating on them - since 1995, it was emotional and wonderful to be present and to have been part of this journey throughout including assisting my dear friend Olajobi Makinwa over the years on several anti-corruption projects.

You can access the UNGC anti-corruption page which has lots of great practical resources here: https://lnkd.in/eWVPwiJt

You can access the UNGC Transformational Governance Think Lab page which has a fabulous self-evaluation tool for business: https://lnkd.in/eg6_yCME

And to top it all off there were a couple of terrific technology related events - the first one was participating in the IBM / All Tech Is Human AI Governance Workshop (check out ATIH's excellent new resource "The Responsible Tech Guide" here: https://lnkd.in/e4GuF3dW ) at which we heard and shared important insights from the speakers and participants including Rebekah Tweed Sandra Khalil Renée Cummings Gemma Galdon Clavell, PhD Noah Broestl Steven Kelts Dr. Rumman Chowdhury Jacob Silver & Dyllan Brown-Bramble

The second tech related event was dining with the 埃森哲 Quantum team and friends including Tom Patterson Ulrich Mans Alberto García García Shreyas Ramesh Arunima Sarkar David Damian .

Last but certainly not least was the terrific Circle Diplomatic Courier event held at the SDG Media Zone at the UN - so great to see my friends Dante A. Disparte Ana Carcani Rold Mercina Tillemann Perez and hear the 4 finalists pitch their impact projects to Circle.

Check out Circle's Impact report here: https://lnkd.in/e7gmMuCs

Finally, in other (related) news:?I am proud to return to NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs as a Non-Resident Senior Fellow this coming year and to work closely with the great team there including my friends?Assistant Dean Carolyn Kissane and Chloe Demrovsky and the wonderful team there including Sylvia Maier Anne Marie Goetz & Mary Beth Altier .

Here endeth the reading, if you got here, as my dear mom-in-law used to say!

Until the next one.
