My visit to the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company (NMRC) for International Women's Day was truly remarkable, and it highlighted one of the many perks of my current job role—being surrounded by brilliant minds. The event was centred around the topic "Leading in a Male-Dominated Sector," and it was an eye-opening discussion.
During the discussion, several female staff members courageously shared their diverse experiences of breaking through societal norms and limitations imposed on women. As I listened attentively, I couldn't help but draw connections between the valuable insights we had just learned and the remarkable qualities exhibited by each and every woman present in the room. In general, this is what I picked up from this experience:
- Knowledge and confidence go hand in hand. As the discussion focused on a topic relatable to women, more eager female participants raised their hands to share their unique experiences. Rather than striving for intellectual perfection, they spoke authentically from their own knowledge, learning, and triumphs. Naturally, their confidence shone through. In the context of women in the workplace, it is crucial to encourage them to deepen their industry knowledge and develop T-shaped skills. By doing so, it not only enhances their confidence but also equips them to navigate various aspects of their profession. It's important to remember that the pursuit of perfection is an illusion, and instead, focusing on continuous learning and growth will contribute to the confidence we exude in the workplace.
- Gender inclusivity advocacy is of utmost importance. During the event, a female staff member shared her personal experience to highlight the significance of supportive systems in the workplace. She mentioned that she applied for her position at NMRC while pregnant, and the event marked her first day back from maternity leave. She expressed gratitude towards NMRC for having established a system that facilitated her continued income and maintained her career. This anecdote further emphasised a crucial aspect of the discussion: creating and normalising systems that support the work-life balance of women in the workplace. It highlighted the importance of implementing policies and practices that enable women to navigate the challenges of balancing their professional and personal responsibilities, ensuring their continued participation and progression in the labor force.
- Your dreams are valid. Traditional gender roles have shaped the allocation of tasks in the workplace, favoring men for roles requiring strength and critical thinking while assigning women to caregiving and "soft" roles. This societal bias was highlighted by another female staff member, who shared her personal experience of being discouraged from pursuing law due to it being perceived as a "man's job." Her determination to prove them wrong led her to successfully study law at the university. It is crucial to empower every woman to pursue her chosen path in life. Empowering women to pursue their desired paths is crucial, and I believe integrating such teachings into the school curriculum and organizing excursions for the students to explore various industries can help instill this mindset in the younger generation. Exposure to diverse workplaces broadens horizons, educates, and inspires young individuals to challenge gender stereotypes and follow their passions.
- Build a personal board of directors. It's crucial to cultivate a network of supporters who can provide guidance, feedback, and support your personal growth. The NMRC management's initiative to organise an inspiring event for their female staff reflects their commitment to workplace equality and personal development. In such an environment, it becomes easier to find allies and advocates who can stand by you. Surround yourself with individuals, both male and female, from top to bottom who are unafraid to offer honest feedback, valuable advice, and support. Rather than waiting for opportunities to form these relationships, take the initiative to create them. Proactively establish connections with people in higher positions and diverse fields who share common values and goals, and actively nurture those relationships.
- Strive for excellence in all aspects. While it may seem trivial, a small incident at the NMRC event exemplified the importance of providing excellent service, reinforcing the discussion's key points. As I unwrapped my gift package, I was amazed by the meticulous presentation of the items. It was evident that careful consideration had been given to every detail. This first impression aligns with the saying, "When someone shows you who they are for the first time, believe them," emphasising the value NMRC places on excellence. This mindset of excellence applies not only to the workplace but also to women in general. It is crucial to consistently strive for excellence in all tasks, going above and beyond to deliver exceptional results. By adding that extra thought and effort to everything we do, we can consistently embody excellence in our work and personal lives.
I believe that, in the end, this experience was valuable for everyone present. It provided an additional boost of motivation and reassurance to everyone that their goals, dreams, and aspirations are valid, regardless of their form. We concluded the event by warmly embracing ourselves, reflecting the theme of International Women's Day, and capturing the moment through pictures to ensure it remains unforgettable.
