Unexpected Teachers

Unexpected Teachers

It amazing me when I find unexpected teachers in every day events. Sometimes these teachers are in an romantic suspense book, a movie, a video of a young child playing in the snow. This week, I’ve experienced lessons from all three of these sources.

I love to read & this week, I really needed to take a break from the two Communications books that I’m currently reading, Crucial Conversations & Radical Candor, so I picked up a romantic suspense book by one of my favorite authors, Lexi Blake. There was a moment in the book that really spoke to me. Two of the main characters where having a crucial conversation about trusting others on their security team & letting others in.

“That when we feel our most alone, when we think we’re lost and in the woods and no one can ever find us, it’s only because we aren’t looking at all the other people who are in that dark place with us. It’s a lie that you’re alone. It’s a lie you tell yourself because not being alone means there’s no reason to turn away from the past. Not being alone means facing it all. It means letting it break you utterly because you can’t heal until you break. And if you’re not alone then it’s okay to break because someone will be there to help you mend” Excerpt From: Submission Impossible, Masters and Mercenaries: Reloaded, Book 1

This really spoke to me because it’s true so many times we get lost in our issues that we don’t realize that many others are going thru similar events but they are also there to support us. It might not be a typical moment of comfort or reassurance, but at the time it was what I needed to hear.

I’ve recently started watching StarWars Clone Wars. I’m a huge Star Wars fan, but had never watched Clone Wars. So while watching them, I got to reading the opening quotes. If you didn’t read them, for skipped the intro like I started to, I recommend you go back to check them out or checkout this article where someone wrote them all down. (https://www.sagespeculation.com/2017/08/01/star-wars-the-clone-wars-episode-opening-quotes/) There are some great inspiration to be found in these quotes. Some of the ones that really spoke to me where;

Season 01Episode 01 – Ambush: Great leaders inspire greatness in others.
Season 02 Episode 16 – Cat and Mouse:A wise leader knows when to follow.
Season 02 Episode 06 – Weapons Factory: No gift is more precious than trust.
Season 02 Episode 07 – Legacy of Terror: Sometimes, accepting help is harder than offering it.
Season 04 Episode 05 – Mercy Mission: Understanding is honoring the truth beneath the surface.

The last unexpected teacher, was my youngest cousin’s 4 year old daughter. Her mom posted a video of her playing in the snow. The pure delight & joy of sledding by herself this week, reminded me that you have to stop & enjoy the little things from time to time. That we have to take the time to enjoy life. That little triumphs when added together result in big wins!

I know these are not where we typically expect to find lessons, but just goes to show that lessons are all around us & can hit us when we least expect it! So opened yourself up & be amazing at the unexpected teachers you have all around you!

I'm glad you took a break from all the communications reading ?? This post is so sweet and it's really true that we can learn so much from every day things! I get motivated to work by listening to soundtracks of some of my favorite shows because I'll remember their hard work or leadership or teamwork, something like that!

?????? Beth Arnold, CSM Awesome article! Love your perspective. I too just started watching Clone Wars and noticed those great opening quotes. Comics and anime do really have some great morals and ethics despite many adults treating them as children's things. And we can learn a lot from unexpected sources; we just need to stay aware and open.
