The Unexpected is a Guarantee

The only thing I can guarantee on an expedition and within life, is the unexpected will occur. It could be as simple as an unexpected tree across your path, to a week of rain during a drought, turning the dry sands, to thick mud, barren cliffs to massive waterfalls, Or a pandemic that puts the entire world at a stand still, a simple cut upon a finger that must now be tended to each day to prevent further unexpected moments of a potential infection. No matter what, all we can do in order to ensure our survival is be prepared, and yes this means prepared in the sense of the proper gear. An extra layer, hidden deep within dry bags to ensure something warm on those cold, wet days. To ALWAYS having a first aid kit that you have inspected and has all your essentials, or a hidden stash of candles and some canned food.

As important as this all is, what I am truly referring to is have you prepared your mind, your soul, for these unexpected moments?

Training yourself to be comfortable within the discomfort of the unknown. Taking the time each day to connect to yourself, your body, your mind, is not just essential, this, and this alone is what will save you. If you can’t stay calm, you won’t think to put that dry layer on, after setting up the fly of your tent. If you can’t settle your heart rate and breath, you will not think clear enough to remember to clean that wound properly, if you can’t connect to your body, you wont notice the infection now spreading. These aren’t practises you can just immediately do they are through routinely implementing the tools that work for you, and regularly pushing your limit, to know you have the control over you, over your mind, over your soul, over your body, cause you are the only one you can expect to be there during your unexpected life.

“There is always a part of my mind that is preparing for the worst, and another part of my mind that believes if I prepare enough for it, the worst won’t happen.” #kayredfieldjamison
