Have you ever found yourself on a journey – personal or professional – where everything seems to go off course?
You had a plan, a destination in mind, but suddenly, you're faced with an unexpected detour that threatens to derail not just your progress, but your entire mindset.
Recently, I experienced this firsthand during a two-week road trip with my daughter, Stella. What was supposed to be a straightforward drive home from Michigan, with a quick stop at Zion National Park, turned into a lesson in leadership and resilience.
The Detour Begins:
After enjoying the slow, winding views through Zion, we exited the park, ready to head home. I confidently consulted WAZE, our trusted GPS app, which directed us to drive ten miles up the road and turn left. Simple enough, right? Wrong. Upon arrival, we discovered the road no longer existed. Undeterred, we followed the app's next suggestion to drive another 10 miles to a small town and turn left on Route 89.
The Plot Thickens:
After a brief stop at a gift shop for Stella, we got back in the car, only for WAZE to instruct us to turn right – the opposite direction of where we needed to go. We drove for a while before the app dropped a bombshell: make a U-turn and go back all the way through Zion, or face an additional four-hour detour!
The Leadership Parallel:
Just as my GPS led me astray, our carefully laid plans in business can suddenly become obsolete. A key team member leaves unexpectedly, market conditions shift dramatically, or a global event reshapes our entire industry overnight. In these moments, our leadership is put to the test.
The Turning Point:
Sitting in the car, feeling anger and frustration building, I realized I had a choice to make. I was tired from two long days of driving, and the prospect of going back through Zion felt daunting. This moment mirrored countless situations in business where leaders face a crossroads: succumb to negativity or reframe the challenge as an opportunity.
Reframing Our Mindset:
1. Recognize the Impact: I realized my reaction wasn't just affecting me. Stella was watching, just as our teams observe how we handle setbacks.
2. Reset and Refocus: I made a conscious decision to reset my mindset and find some inner grit. This was key to not ruining our wonderful trip.

3. Find the Hidden Opportunities: What seemed like a waste of time led to unexpected joys. We saw a flock of rams traversing the terrain and discovered a special coffee roastery with incredible views.
4. Problem-Solving in Action: When we encountered a rock in the brake rotor making a terrible noise, Stella retrieved it with a credit card, learning she could solve a problem herself.
5. Embrace the Journey: The scenic route back through Zion, initially seen as an inconvenience, became a chance to appreciate beauty we might have missed.
The Leadership Lesson:
In multifamily management, as in life, the unexpected is inevitable. Residents will present unforeseen challenges, team dynamics will shift, and market forces will throw curveballs. Our success as leaders isn't determined by the absence of these challenges, but by how we choose to navigate them.
While my daughter napped during our extended journey home, I reflected on how this frustrating detour mirrored challenges in the multifamily industry. Things don't go as planned, regardless of how well we prepare. Technology fails us, residents come with problems, team members face unexpected issues, and leadership may suddenly shift priorities. The list of unplanned events goes on, but how we choose to show up is key.
Driving the Conversation:
1. What recent unexpected challenge have you faced in your leadership role?
2. How did you reframe your mindset to approach the situation more positively?
3. What unexpected benefits or learnings came from a situation that initially seemed purely negative?
4. How do you cultivate resilience in yourself and your team to better handle future setbacks?
Remember, the road to success is rarely a straight line. It's filled with detours, scenic routes, and sometimes, complete U-turns. The true measure of a leader is not in avoiding these challenges, but in finding the inner strength to navigate them with grace, creativity, and a positive mindset.
What's challenging your resilience today? How can you find the inner strength to show up differently and see the beauty in the change of direction?
I really want to hear from you and hope you will share as well. Let's continue this conversation in the comments.
