UNETHICAL USE OF AI
"Artificial Intelligence can help in the determination of deterioration done to the Parkinson’s patients without them having to wear any device or sensors", says the head of Tencent Medical Al Lab, on collaborating with Medopad, a London based medical firm.
Albeit significant, this is just one of the many ways AI is on its mission to make our lives less complicated and more accessible.
In one of my blogs posted last month, I discussed in brief how Artificial Intelligence is helping industries around the world serve better and what business owners can do to further escalate their productivity by harnessing AI.
But like they say, every coin has two sides, so does Artificial Intelligence. There is no dearth of examples of famous scientist, tech magnates warning the world and preachers of AI about how despite it’s insurmountable potential to benefit mankind by making their lives healthier, by enhancing the approach ability, it poses significant threat with some going at length to say that it has the ability to wipe out the human race. Amid the excitement of the unfolding how AI can transform our world, there lies the fear of machines acting out of human control, which is becoming apparent with new developments.
Today let's talk about how the intellects are fearing an algorithm and targeted models to have the potential of becoming future tyrant ruler of the planet.
?WARFARE:
There have been talks of using AI in warfare, with reports claiming the first world nations are testing robots and AI warfare technologies to strengthen their force in the event of another war. While this would be a transformation of global significance since industrial revolution after World War 1 but by granting them more autonomy, humans are digging a grave for themselves. If it went into the wrong hand, it could lead to fatalities with mass casualties. With the increase in the level of AI astuteness and autonomy, the threat is even more severe than what we can fathom.
EMPLOYMENT:
With AI only lacking emotional intelligence, it has been feared that the day is not far when the human workforce will become redundant, and unemployment would rise to its peak. This would further escalate the societal inequality.
DIGITAL MANOEUVRING:
Fake videos, misinformation have become an everyday nuisance that we have to deal with. Those misusing AI take advantage of the human tendency to believe everything, backed by strong visual evidence. This digital manoeuvring; pose a severe threat to our society, for example, if used in sensitive areas, it is enough to provoke sentiments and lead to destruction.
CYBER THREAT:
AI is a dual-use technology, meaning, the same technology that is being used to reinforce and enhance our cyber-security can also be used for cyber-attacks. Machine learning and artificial intelligence can be used to commit cyber crime of significance.
What is needed is proper regulation of AI, which government of leading nation is yet to draft a framework on. But regulating AI by increasing transparency and accountability of those who are developing services with AI as their foundation poses a severe regulatory problem, considering AI is still in a nascent stage and can not be put in a definition.
The AI controversy might receive applause as well as flak in its development. So the only statement that I feel apt to conclude my viewpoint here is, Humans despite ranking the highest in the food chain, are now prone to become a victim of their creation. What we need to understand is, it's not AI we are up against but how we make use of it: either by being naive or by being meticulous in our utilisation.
