Unemployment Numbers Aren't As Good As You Think If You're Unemployed

If you're unemployed, you've been seeing a dropping unemployment rate and more jobs being advertised. This makes it easy to fall into a false sense of security that your job search will all of a sudden become so much easier and you'll find a job quickly.

Unfortunately, there's more to the unemployment numbers that actually signals finding a job when unemployed is getting harder and more competitive. But there are also ways that you can beat unemployment, even in the face of rising competiton.

First here's the dark side of unemployment numbers that you've got to be aware of:

• New jobs and unemployment rate numbers fell far short of projections for 2 months straight.
• There are still over 9M unemployed workers, plus all the people who stopped job searching (that are in addition to the 9M).
• Currently employed workers now make up most of your competition, reentering the job market as job ads increased to try and "trade up". This is common in recoveries, as currently employed workers stayed in bad situations because they had a safe paycheck during a rough economy. Now that more jobs are being advertised, labor economists expect that 50% of currently employed workers will search for a new job, making the number of people competing against you over 8x larger. And they have an advantage, because they're currently employed.
