Unemployed Job Seekers: Waiting To Get Lucky Or Are You Doing More To Create Your Own Luck?

Unemployed Job Seekers: Waiting To Get Lucky Or Are You Doing More To Create Your Own Luck?

Are you like most other unemployed job seekers, continuing to do the same things that haven't worked, but hoping that, this time you'll get lucky?

Or are you doing more in your resume, interview, and job search strategy to create that luck?

Here are some ways you can start to create your own job search luck when you're unemployed:

  1. Recognize The Additional Risk You Present: Your next employer doesn't know why you're unemployed, even if you were let go in a huge layoff. Since they can't tell why you were laid off instead of others, you need to prove that your last employer was nuts to let you go, rather than telling your next employer that it wasn't your fault.
  2. Mitigate The Risk You Present: Once you recognize that unemployment makes you a riskier candidate to employers, now you need to overcome that risk. And to overcome risk, you need to do more than you're doing now, more than you're used to, and more than other competitive candidates.
  3. Do More Of What Matters To Employers: Most other job seekers think they're doing more when they apply to more jobs and send more resumes (doing the same things that haven't worked). Employers don't care how many resumes and applications you send ... they want to hire a candidate who wants their specific opportunity, not just any job.
  4. Learn How To Do More Of What Matters:

  • Find more effective employer information
  • Go beyond the job description, to find the individual hiring manager's current needs (because they aren't in the published job description)
  • Invest more time customizing your resume to show you meet the individual hiring manager's current key/priority problems
  • Create a stronger first impression in your resume and interviews
  • Prove your success, rather than making hiring managers guess
  • Get to jobs before they are posted, so you can be the top candidate in the hiring manager's mind

You'd already be using these strategies, if you knew how. Unfortunately, no one's taught you how, so you're using average job search advice and hoping you'll get lucky. But more difficult job search problems require more advanced solutions, to be successful and fast.
