Unemployed Job Seekers: How Many Fake Jobs Did You Apply To This Week?

Unemployed Job Seekers: How Many Fake Jobs Did You Apply To This Week?

If you're unemployed, you applied to a lot more fake jobs than you realize.

Because about 30% of jobs advertised on job boards are fake, chances are you applied to a lot of fake jobs, wasting your precious job search time. This usually is a higher percentage of applications unemployed job seekers, who are more likely to conduct broader searches, than the narrower searches of currently employed candidates.

I'm not describing scams, though there are plenty of those posted also. I'm describing fake jobs posted by real employers and recruiting firms, including some of the largest and most well-respected employers/recruiters out there.

How can there be so many fake ads?

  • External and internal recruiters post fake ads to build candidate pipelines
  • Recruiters post fake ads to keep their metrics high during slow hiring environments
  • False signals to employees and to external interests that the employer is hiring
  • Unlimited job posting plans or to use pre-paid posting credits

Since you can't get a real job by responding to a fake ad, here some clues to consider if you're wondering if you're applying to a fake job ad, according to Fast Company:

  1. Non-detailed job descriptions: When the job post doesn't describe much detail about the job, consider it suspect.
  2. It's not on the career page in their website: Employers?also post fake jobs on their career page. When there's only a job board (or LinkedIn) post, but the employer fails to post on their career page, watch out.?
  3. It's old: While not all job old job posts are fake, many fake job posts are old. An old post could be an "evergreen job" that's a job where recruiters might need an inventory of candidates, so they keep an ad running, even though they're not hiring.

Of course you want to avoid applying to fake jobs, because they're a waste of your time, and they make your unemployment job search take longer ... at least 30% longer.

Fortunately, there are also ways to avoid fake job posts, by changes to your job search strategy. These can even help you avoid fake job ads from real employers and real people. And avoiding fake job posts is one of many ways to land your next job faster when you're unemployed.
