Unemployed Job Seekers Can Find A Job Faster By Thinking Like A Headhunter, Not Like A Candidate

Unemployed job seekers tend to think about describing themselves to hiring managers, based on what you're most proud of ... What you feel you do best.

That only works if you choose to focus on the things most important than the hiring manager. Making this more challenging, the things that are most important to the hiring manager are rarely in the job description.

Headhunters focus on what's most important to hiring managers and realize that's almost never in the published job description. Job descriptions are written generically by HR, covering many similar jobs, and written long before the beginning of the year.

Headhunters realize that hiring managers each have their own unique needs, even when in the same industry or department.

Here are some ways for unemployed job seekers to make your job search more effective, by thinking like a headhunter:

  1. Find Out Hiring Manager Current Needs: They're very different than published job criteria. You've experienced this when you've been told you didn't get an interview, advance or get an offer because you didn't meet criteria that were never in the published job description.
  2. Give Them What They Want: There's low probability that the things you're most proud of are also what the hiring manager needs. There's a much higher chance that other things you've done are far more important to the hiring manger. The story your resume/interview tells will be more effective if it's not about you, but about how well you understand and have already solved that individual hiring manager's current problems.
  3. Avoid HR And Internal Recruiters: Headhunters try to avoid HR and internal recruiters like the plague. Headhunters realize that HR and internal recruiters slow the hiring process, get in your way, and don't make hiring decisions.
