Unemployed? Don't Make Employers Hunt For Why They Should Interview You

To beat unemployment and find a great job fast, you need to shout why employers should interview and hire you.

But most resumes (and interviews) force employers to hunt for it ... causing you to lose opportunities.

As a top national recruiter who reviews hundreds of resumes per day, I see this every day. Almost all of the resumes I see (including resumes from professional resume writers, career coaches, and outplacement) fail to create a first impression that clearly shows an employer why they need to interview (and hire) you.

Even when job seekers think their resume's first impression shows why they should be interviewed, from the employer's viewpoint your first impression is almost always confusing and/or average.

It's because you've been taught to make it confusing, based on bad advice from outplacement, most career coaches and authors. You've been taught to create a resume first impression of being multi-talented ... showing employers many things you can do. The idea is that if you get lucky, you might guess what an employer is seeking. You're asking employers "I have all this stuff, do you need any of it?".

A multi-talented first impression forces HR reps, recruiters and hiring managers to hunt through your resume to see if you can solve the individual hiring manager's current key and priority problems (and these problems are rarely in the published job description). Employers don't take the time to hunt for the reason they should be interested in you.

You force your readers to hunt when you brain dump, because you haven't focused an employer's attention on how you meet the hiring manager's primary needs - instead drawing attention to low importance items the hiring manager doesn't care much about.

TheLadders published a study showing your resume's readers make their first decision to move to the next candidate (or stay on your resume) based on a first impression given in an average 6 seconds. Employers move on to the next resume, because they don't need to hunt through your resume to see if you have what they need. In the highly competitive 2024 job market, employers expect to see 5-10 qualified applicants competing for each interview spot (so if they are offering 10 interview spots, that's 50-100 qualified candidates, plus all of the unqualified ones).

This extends your job search, especially if you're unemployed, draining your savings, causing you stress, and frustrating you daily.
