Thank you for interviewing with us today, can you introduce yourself to us?
Since my early years, I've been deeply involved in volunteering and community service, focusing on aiding marginalized individuals—those who are homeless, disabled, and facing learning challenges. My dedication even led me to contribute my time and skills to initiatives in Africa.
Through my own journey, I came to realize a critical need for personal healing. Having experienced homelessness and trauma myself, these experiences became the driving force behind the inception of Sol Haven.
From the initial funding of Sol Haven, I've shouldered the responsibility of propelling business development, nurturing connections, and managing funding applications. I've taken on roles as a Wellbeing Early Intervention Inspiring Speaker, a Sustainability Champion, and a Community Advocate.
My commitment lies in passionately speaking and tirelessly working to enhance the lives of those facing homelessness and vulnerability. Honoured by the Prime Minister of Great Britain for contributions to community well-being, together with Natasha, I've been instrumental in supporting communities to flourish.
What inspired you to start your business, and can you provide some background on its origins and evolution?
My journey stands as a testament to the incredible power of compassion, resilience, and an unyielding belief in the human spirit's ability to heal and thrive. Growing up in a bustling city, my life was anything but ordinary, shaped by experiences that moulded me into the advocate and leader I am today.
Born as Thomas Heaton, grappling with the intricacies of identity began early in my life. Being part of a twin pair led me to question my individuality and place in the world. This struggle with personal identity later transformed into a deep well of empathy, emphasizing the uniqueness of each person's journey and the importance of being seen and heard.
Coming of age in the heart of the Black Country exposed me to the stark realities of urban life. Witnessing the disparities and challenges faced by marginalized communities became a profound motivation for my life's work.
A pivotal moment occurred during a life-altering trip to Israel, where I experienced a spiritual awakening that led me to change my name. However, upon returning and legally altering my name in the UK, I faced unexpected isolation from friends and family, leaving me feeling disconnected.
Amidst these changes, I met my future spouse. While our marriage initially brought joy and connection, it also introduced a period of deep grief and challenges. This phase led me to sever ties with my family, a decision that took a toll on my well-being and sense of self over time.
As the marriage dissolved, I found myself once more navigating loss and heartache, further shaping my understanding of the human journey. These experiences underscored the uniqueness of each person's path and the importance of empathy in supporting those facing hardships.
These chapters in my life have etched a profound understanding of human experiences, instilling in me a deep sense of empathy and driving my commitment to support those navigating their own challenges.
In the context of your business, how do you define sustainability, and what does it mean to you personally?
Within Sol Haven, sustainability is a comprehensive concept, spanning environmental, social, and economic dimensions. It's all about conducting business and community initiatives in a way that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to fulfil their own. For me and Sol Haven, sustainability hits home in several key ways:
Firstly, it involves environmental stewardship. We prioritize eco-friendly practices like organic growing, permaculture, and renewable energy sources to minimize our ecological footprint and foster biodiversity.
Secondly, it's about nurturing community well-being. We're dedicated to creating an inclusive and thriving community that uplifts its members, particularly those who are vulnerable or homeless. Sol Haven aims to equip them with the tools and skills necessary for reintegration, mental health improvement, and a deeper connection with nature.
Thirdly, it’s about ensuring economic viability in the long run. We pursue financial sustainability through our eco-sustainable farm, retreats, and educational programs, which in turn support our charitable endeavours.
Ethical values are integral to our sustainability approach. We strongly believe in the ethical responsibility of providing a safe and nurturing space for those who need it most.
Overall, for both me and Sol Haven, sustainability is a comprehensive ethos. It encompasses ecological, social, and economic facets and is underpinned by our commitment to creating a better world for both present and future generations. It's not just a strategy but a deeply personal and organizational philosophy that aligns with our core values and our vision for positive global change.

Under the guidance of Natasha Caton and myself, Sol Haven has taken significant strides in implementing a wide array of sustainability practices and initiatives that align with our comprehensive sustainability objectives. We prioritize permaculture growing, adhering to its principles in our cultivation techniques. This approach, focused on harmonizing with nature, promotes soil health, water conservation, and the utilization of organic, locally sourced materials.
Sustainability is embedded in our infrastructure. Our physical spaces are constructed using recycled and sustainable materials, integrating energy-efficient features from the ground up.
Active community engagement is a cornerstone of our sustainability efforts. Through workshops, retreats, and educational events, we foster environmental awareness and sustainable practices among our local community.
At the heart of our sustainability initiatives is the well-being of homeless and vulnerable individuals. By providing a safe, nurturing environment, we address social sustainability, empowering individuals and enhancing their mental health and overall quality of life.
Our financial sustainability is supported through various income-generating activities, such as educational programs and retreats, reinforcing our ability to continue our charitable work in the long run.
