Unearth Your Money Story

We all have a story when it comes to money. Money stories are narratives from your past, usually formed in childhood, that still affect your behavior with money today, even if they’re not true anymore.
We're diving deep into our unconscious mind in the latest episode of the Money is Emotional podcast, "Unearthing Your Money Story."
Here are some of the highlights.
Your past affects your future.
When we were born, we had zero opinions about money, good or bad. We learned from our parents and other authority figures (grandparents, teachers, pastors) in our lives about how money works and how we should feel about it. We “inherited” their biases and most of us aren’t even aware of them.?
Children’s brains and adults’ brains are very different!
The reason why your early childhood experiences with money are so important is because of your brain! Children between the ages of 2 and 7 are mostly in a brainwave state of theta while awake. It’s known as the “super learning state.” Everything gets absorbed and stored into their unconscious mind as the truth. Learning during a state of theta brainwaves fast-tracks information into your unconscious mind, whether it’s true or not.
?
Unhelpful money stories keep us in self-sabotaging cycles.
I tell Carrie’s story of being stuck in negative patterns, not being able to save for retirement, despite being worried about it. Her inherited money story? Listen to the episode to find out what it is and how we fixed it!
If YOU find yourself repeating the same destructive financial patterns over and over again, despite wanting to change, an unhelpful money story might be the root of the problem.
?
The first step to removing unhelpful money stories is to unearth them.
In addition to reflecting on your parents’ words and actions about money, think back to your earliest money memory. It might be positive or negative. Maybe your mom gave $5 to buy something at the store and you lost it.
If she scolded you for losing the money and called you irresponsible, you still might not trust yourself with money. Also listen to the words that come out of YOUR own mouth about money, especially if they’re negative.
Write down one or more memories from your childhood that might still be affecting the way you view money and wealth.
?
The second step is to rewrite the money story and practice forgiveness.
I tell Laurie’s story about being physically ill at the thought of opening a savings account… and the dramatic event that caused it when she was five during this episode.
Once you’ve uncovered your unhealthy money story, write an alternative version with a happy ending. You might also need to write a letter of forgiveness to a person who hurt you with money, or to yourself!
We can’t “delete” negative money stories but we can overwrite them with happy endings!
?
Left unexamined, our money stories can keep us unconsciously repeating behaviors that aren’t good for our personal finances. We can be intentional about identifying and transforming them into narratives that serve us.?

1 年Christine Luken this is so true. So many of our stories about money that we tell ourselves are just that, stories and beliefs that have been fed to us. So important to derail those thoughts and create our own relationship with money.
