UNDO Impact Update | March
Publishing Our First Peer-Reviewed Paper
We are very excited to announce that UNDO, in collaboration with Newcastle University, has published a scientific paper in PLOS ONE journal.
This paper covers the promising agronomic benefits seen from applying crushed basalt to agricultural land in the 2022 growing season in North East England. Our findings include:
These year-one results form part of an ongoing trial, and together, we will continue to assess the impact of enhanced rock weathering on crops in a temperate climate.
Field Notes
As we enter into the brighter months, we’re continuing to see lots of interest from British farmers and hope the ground will be dry enough to ramp up operations in North East Scotland very shortly. Across the pond, we are ready to start our 2024 spreading operations with Canadian Wollastonite. Throughout all regions, we are adapting our operational processes to deliver high-intensity split field and small plot monitoring sites in parallel with rock spreading.
At Dumyat, our home of in-field science, our Science Team (pictured above) battled the elements to gather soil cores and pore water which are now at our labs in the James Hutton Institute for analysis.
You may have noticed that our number of expected tonnes of CO? to be removed has decreased. In late 2023 in collaboration with our verification partner Puro.earth, we decided to implement additional deduction requirements for CO? losses and leakages that occur after our rock weathers. Taking these factors (such as river and ocean loss, plant uptake, and non-carbonic weathering) into account has resulted in a lower CO? sequestration rate from our operations. However, this deduction increases the integrity of our credits, shows continued refinement of UNDO’s science and ultimately improves confidence in the ERW field.
Reporting from the 2024 Low Carbon Agriculture Show
For the second year, UNDO showcased at the Low Carbon Agriculture Show at the NAEC exhibition hall in Stoneleigh.
This was an excellent opportunity to interact with farmers, quarry partners, media and more throughout the conference. We had insightful conversations with the likes of the Soil Association, Defra and NFU discussing future partnerships, regulatory frameworks and insetting propositions. Thanks to those who came to say hello after seeing us on BBC Countryfile, and we invite you to come visit us at stand H73 at Innovation Zero in London’s Olympia (April 30th - May 1st)!

Kicking off our MRV Blog Series
Ever wonder how many factors you have to consider when trying to measure a solution in nature’s open system?
Our Head of Science, Dr XinRan Liu, explores the gritty realities in the first in a series of blogs that will discuss the scientific, methodological, logistical and financial implications of practising good measurement, reporting and verification (MRV).
MRV is the system of scientific techniques we use to quantify the impact of our carbon removal solution and its attendant co-benefits. It is a proof of work and an auditable trail that backs up our value to our stakeholders and our planet. But conducting sound MRV is difficult, and it only becomes more difficult as you try to reduce more and more uncertainty.
Come on a quick and dirty tour of what ERW MRV has to account for when working with rocks and minerals, soil systems, local climates and more.
