Understanding What Drives You: The Power of the DiSC
One of my favorite ways to use personality assessments is to help people discover what motivates them. It’s like a cheat code to understanding (and using) the things about our personalities that help us reach success. One of my favorite tools is the DiSC personality test. It can be a great way to help you discover what drives you – particularly as the leader of a team.
What is the DiSC Personality Test?
The DiSC categorizes individuals into four primary personality types: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. Each trait represents a distinct behavioral style and indicates how individuals perceive and interact with their environment. The test enables individuals to understand their strengths, weaknesses, communication styles, and motivators. Let’s break each down into how it drives us.
Dominance: The Driving Force of Achievement
The Dominance personality type is characterized by assertiveness, directness, and a strong desire for control. Individuals with a dominant nature are often motivated by achieving results, taking charge, and overcoming challenges. They tend to be confident decision-makers, driven by a need for power and authority.
Influence: The Drive for Connection and Social Interaction
The Influence personality type embodies sociability, enthusiasm, and a desire for social interaction. These individuals thrive on building relationships, inspiring others, and gaining recognition. They are often driven by the need for social approval, seeking to make a positive impact on others and the world around them.
Steadiness: The Motivation for Stability and Harmony
The Steadiness personality type is characterized by patience, dependability, and a strong focus on maintaining stability. Individuals with a steady nature seek harmony, cooperation, and a balanced environment. They are motivated by security, consistency, and creating a peaceful atmosphere in their personal and professional lives.
Conscientiousness: The Drive for Accuracy and Perfection
The Conscientiousness personality type is characterized by meticulousness, precision, and a strong attention to detail. These individuals are motivated by accuracy, organization, and achieving high standards. They excel in tasks that require deep analysis, planning, and following rules. They derive satisfaction from delivering quality work and meeting deadlines.

Where Do We Go From Here?
Understanding your DiSC personality is just the first step. Through self-awareness, this new knowledge can inform the way you plan, work with your team, and even how you set goals. There’s no magic in personality test scores – they’re not useful until you put them to work for you.?
For instance, if you have a Dominance personality type, you might find lots of motivation in setting ambitious targets, taking charge of projects, and being recognized for your achievements. These wouldn’t motivate someone with an Influence personality type…they’ll need interactions with others. Alternatively, someone with a Steadiness personality type needs a balance – they won’t be motivated by the same ruthless goals. A Conscientious person needs tasks that are more centered on established guidelines.
