What is Vicarious Traumatization?
Vicarious Traumatization (VT) occurs when individuals are repeatedly exposed to the trauma experienced by others, leading to emotional and psychological impacts on themselves. This can manifest as feelings of overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, or detachment.
Impact on Female Officers
From my nearly 30 years in law enforcement, I've seen how VT affects female officers.
The key stressors include:
- Emotional Strain: Female officers often handle cases involving severe trauma, such as domestic violence and child abuse. Studies show that around 65% of female officers report high levels of emotional exhaustion due to their work (National Institute of Justice, 2021).
- Isolation: Female officers in a male-dominated field may feel isolated or unsupported. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 50% of female officers believe they face additional challenges and pressures compared to their male counterparts, contributing to increased feelings of isolation (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2019).
- Burnout: Female officers experience higher levels of burnout than their male counterparts. Research published in Police Practice and Research found that female officers are 30% more likely to experience burnout, partly due to the dual pressures of high-stress work environments and balancing family responsibilities (Police Practice and Research, 2022).
Impact on My Daughters

The effects of VT extended beyond my own experience and affected my family. A few years ago, my oldest daughter revealed how terrified she was when I was on call at the detective bureau. At that time, I was unaware of how deeply my job impacted her, as I had not yet learned about vicarious trauma.
This realization underscored VT's profound impact on family members and inspired me to focus my doctoral study on this topic. Understanding VT has been crucial for managing its effects on my daughters and me.
Conclusion
Vicarious Traumatization is a significant issue for female law enforcement officers, impacting their mental health and family life. The emotional strain, isolation, and risk of burnout are compounded by the unique challenges female officers face. My personal experience highlights the need to recognize and address VT to support officers and their families effectively.
