Understanding, uncovering, and finding potential in others.

Understanding, uncovering, and finding potential in others.

Potential is an important but challenging assessment of a person's future capabilities. In business there are two relevant perspectives to consider when building successful teams. Do businesses hire experienced talent from the outset or develop less experienced employees over time? Business executives look at the investment it takes to achieve potential. Some companies need highly skilled employees right away while other companies invest time and money in developing necessary skills. It becomes a discussion between the short and long-term goals of the organization. Both are important when considering current and future needs.

We all want high potential employees working for our organizations. If you want to help others reach their potential, believe in them. In my career I’ve seen many capable and underutilized employees exceed expectations simply by showing genuine belief in their potential. Sometimes these people are hiding right before our eyes! When given the proper tools, encouragement, direction and accountability, progression takes place. In most cases, people just need an opportunity to shine.

To find high potential employees, carefully consider the employees work and educational history. How hard do they work? What goals do they set for themselves and what achievements have they made? How do they handle stress? Do they have balance in their lives? What is their purpose and direction in life, and what drives them? How do they treat others? Are they generally optimistic? Answers to these questions, along with others, can often provide insight into a person’s potential.
