Understanding Types of Threads and Geometric Parameters

Using suitable kinds of threads makes it easy and reliable. So, it’s important to understand a variety of threads for fitting connections. Such types of threads include;

  • Cotton thread
  • Polyester thread
  • Royan thread

There are two main types of thread, Parallel and Taper threads. Types of parallel threads are BSSP, UN, and metric parallel. BSPT, NPT, NPTF, and Metric tapered are types of tapered thread. At Creatingway, we use these two thread types in fitting connection processes.

What is Screw Thread?

A screw thread is a ridge covering around a cylinder and cone. Its function is to convert between rotational and linear movement. A helical structure is essential for the conversion process. They are features found at screw machines and thread fasteners. The mechanical advantage of screw threads depends on the lead. Straight thread diameter remains the same due to a similar profile. Tapered threads diameter gets smaller due to thread profile.

Geometric Parameters of The Thread

Major Thread Diameter

The major thread diameter is also known as the outer diameter. It’sIt’s the largest diameter in a gear tooth or thread feature. The helix height is slightly raised around the thread. We use a clipper in measuring the external diameter. Other than the clipper, a thread pitch gauge is also usable. We use it in measuring female threads. While the clippers measure male threads, saving time and money.

Minor Thread Diameter

The minor thread diameter is also known as the inner diameter. Roots of the thread crest are touchable via an imaginary cylinder. Measuring the major and minor diameters requires special equipment. Inner diameter measures the root of the thread at the intersecting area. Also, the base of the thread is measurable.

Pitch diameter

Pitch diameter is also known as effective diameter. It is an imaginary co-axial cylinder used to intercept surface thread. The equality of the thread groove is half of the nominal pitch. To identify the thread diameter and size, we use a pitch gauge. The thread pitch gauge evaluates the thread’s numbers at a certain distance.

Pitch

The thread pitch is a distance from the screw thread to its threshold. So, the axis is measurable parallel to the thread pitch. Points should match adjacently on the surface along an axial plane.

Lead

Lead is the distance a screw thread covers axially in one turn. On a single-threaded screw, pitch and lead appear the same.

Tooth Angle

The geometry and form of a thread is the tooth angle. The flexibility of threads enables them to acquire various styles and shapes. Hence, tooth angles are; square, trapezoidal, and triangle-shaped.

Threaded Angle

The angle of a thread relies on its sides measured in an axial plane. Hence, known as the threaded angle.

What are The Different Types of Screw Threads?

Metric Threads

Metric threads are also known as international threads. They are the first global ideals set on screw threads. “M” indicates screw threads’ nominal outer diameter. The “M” also shows the smooth-walled hole diameter. The coarse thread has a larger pitch compared to the fine thread.

British Standard Threads

Joseph Whitworth devised the British Standard Whitworth (BMW) thread. It is the world’s first pipe tapered thread, a unit-based thread. BMW forms major types of threads and other ideals like;

  • BSCon
  • British standard thread with fine pitches (BSF)
  • BSCopper

We use BST in making special line adjustments found on bolts. To increase vibrations in automobiles, we use BSF. Aero work and line adjustment are also increased via BSF.

Unified Thread Standard (UTS)

The Unified thread standard has rounded roots and crests. UTS consists of three groups:

  • Applications entailing profuse tolerance for easy assembly
  • General applications entailing unified threads
  • The nearness of fit and precision of thread elements

The groups are according to the wants of the UTS.

“V” Shape Threads

The “V” shaped threads are the most used type of thread. Their features make them easy to cut via various methods. The means are via tap, lathe machine, or die. The appearance of the shape is the English letter V.

Square Threads

Due to square threads efficiency, we can produce;

  • Power
  • Jackscrews
  • Leadscrews

The square threads are the most efficient thread forms. However, they aren’t easy to fabricate compared to other thread forms. Square threads are weaker than V-shaped ones. The feature is advantageous as it offers less frictional resistance.

Acme Threads

Acme threads originate from the transformation of square threads. Due to the evolution of square thread, Acme is much stronger. We mostly use Acme thread in the making of;

  • Bench vices
  • Screw-cutting lathes
  • Brass valves

Knuckle Threads

The knuckle thread has a rounded top and bottom. The cast and roll are made easier since it’s an adaptation of the square thread. We use knuckle threads in the making of;

  • Valves
  • Fittings
  • Slides
  • Hydrants
  • The neck of glass bottles
  • Coupling gears
  • Large molded insulators used in the electric trade
  • Railway carriage couplings
