??Understanding trichomes
You’re more than likely familiar with trichomes: the bulbs of glory on the cannabis plant. These tiny, glistening structures are like little factories that produce all the cannabinoids and essential oil from simple cellular materials — an act of?true alchemical magic.?
The more the industry at large understands trichomes, the closer we’ll get to developing the most true-to-plant products possible. When manufacturers can replicate the cannabinoid and terpene combinations that glandular trichomes produce, consumers can reap the benefits of the “complete cannabis” (what some people call the entourage effect) experience.?
Today, in the interest of better understanding trichomes, we share the highlights of a research study entitled "Cannabis Glandular Trichomes: A Cellular Metabolite Factory" by Higher Learning LV.?

Deep Dive: Cannabis Trichomes Are Cannabinoid Factories
According to the research study summary by?Higher Learning LV, there’s been a critical need to validate the results of previous research on the cannabis plant. (This is because there hasn’t been uniform standards employed in past studies). There’s also been a critical need to replace current misinformation surrounding cannabis with evidence-based procedures. Researchers from Germany, Israel, and China set out to solve this problem with "Cannabis Glandular Trichomes: A Cellular Metabolite Factory" which identifies several gaps in knowledge.
For example, scientific literature has described three types of trichomes: capitate-sessile, capitate-stalked, and bulbous. The study explained that two varieties of sessile trichomes exist —?one that is expressed on the vegetative leaves and other non-flower areas of the plant — and another that populates the immature flowers and eventually grows into the stalked variety. In the past, researchers considered all sessile trichomes to be the same because they did not understand that the flower-based (calyx-based) versions are merely juveniles that will morph into "adult" stalked versions as the plant matures and approaches harvest.?
