Chasing Teamership (Part II)

What would happen if everyone in your team, teams or organisation was able to bring their best and bring out the best in others across multiple teams more often? That is the intention of Teamership.

As someone who is passionate about Teamership (enough to invent the word and then write a book about it!), it is unsurprising that I have a belief that Chasing Teamership is a worthwhile pursuit for team members, team leaders and executive teams.

Here are some benefits of Chasing Teamership.

Teamership impacts culture and vice versa

High levels of Teamership support a culture that is focused on performance. Likewise, a generative culture supports, promotes and values high levels of Teamership.

Teamership supports collaboration

High levels of Teamership require us to be collaborative. When we are able to genuinely merge our interests with the interests of others, it delivers mutual benefit and becomes a more sustainable way to operate.

Teamership supports resilience

A central component of Teamership is the need to support the performance of others. This directly impacts on their ability to absorb change without burning out. This mutual support makes individuals, teams and organisations less resistant to change and more resilient.

Teamership promotes shared leadership

Research shows that shared leadership is a benefit for high performing teams. Teamership is a form of leadership that relies on the capacity of individuals to respond to situational requirements. Individuals’ willingness to both lead and follow is increasingly important as teams and organisations respond to an increasingly complex and changing operating environment.

Teamership prioritises learning

Learning is moving from being a competitive advantage to being the cost of entry in many roles. Teamership relies on learning and promotes learning. Great team members are always learning and developing their capabilities as a part of their role at the same time as sharing what they are learning across their multiple teams.

Teamership is an untapped energy source for most team members, teams and organisations. Committing to Chasing Teamership does not mean that all of these benefits will be instantly experienced. It does, however, give you the best chance - and I’d say that’s worth your energy, attention and time.

Some questions to consider this week:

  • How might higher levels of Teamership benefit you at an individual level?
  • Would your team benefit from increased levels of Teamership?
  • What would happen if everyone in your organisation was able to bring their best and bring out the best in others across multiple teams more often?
  • Can you commit to Chasing Teamership?
