Understanding stroke in India through HealthPlix EMR
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally, accounting for a significant proportion of non-communicable disease-related mortality. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 13 million people experience a stroke each year, and approximately 5.5 million of them do not survive. This staggering figure highlights the urgency in understanding stroke and taking preventive measures.
World Stroke Day, observed annually on October 29th, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about stroke, its prevention, treatment, and the importance of timely intervention. In order to tackle the escalating challenge of stroke, it is crucial to have accurate data regarding the occurrence, prevalence, and outcomes of stroke.?HealthPlix EMR serves as an efficient platform for stroke management via prompt data collection, storage, and access to patient information per se.
According to the EMR data, approximately 25,000* patients presented with stroke during the period of Jan 2023 to Oct 2023. The male patients were found to be more prone to the condition when compared to the females. The EMR data also illustrated hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders to be the frequent comorbidities of the patients associated with stroke.
Among these comorbidities, hypertension was observed to be the more pronounced accounting for approximately 46%* of the patients presenting with stroke. On further evaluation,? 22%* of patients reported a systolic blood pressure which was greater than 140 and diastolic blood pressure greater than 90 indicating it as a predisposing risk factor. These observations from the HealthPlix platform equips physicians to identify high-risk patients and prioritize their management and control to reduce the risk of stroke.
