Understanding Self-Confidence

Understanding Self-Confidence

What is self-confidence?

Confidence is the belief we have in ourselves that we can be effective and achieve what we want. Therefore it is expressed through action.

Signs of low self confidence

  • Avoiding situations: People with low self-esteem tend to avoid situations that make them feel vulnerable or insecure.
  • Predicting negative outcomes: People often predict negative outcomes before events even happen.
  • Negative self-talk: They constantly criticize themselves internally, undermining their self-confidence.
  • Something is constantly wrong and needs fixing: People focus on perceived flaws instead of self-acceptance. If I have accepted myself I seek personal growth for my own self improvement with awareness.
  • Symptoms of depression and anxiety: Feeling unworthy can contribute to depressive symptoms, excessive worry and fear.
  • Constantly wanting to please others: Prioritizing the needs of others over their own. You do everything you can to please them so they will accept you.

Can I build self-confidence?

Unfortunately there are no injections of confidence. Self-confidence is a skill that is cultivated.

To have self-confidence we need first and foremost to have self-esteem, to accept ourselves. To realize who we are, what our values, strengths and weaknesses are. What we have achieved. And with our self-esteem established, we go into action. The more I try for something and see that I am slowly succeeding, the more I feel good and start to feel confident about myself.

Self-confidence vs Self-esteem

Self-confidence and self-esteem are related but different concepts that are very often confused.

  • Self-confidence

As a definition self confidence refers to confidence in our abilities, skills and judgement. It is built through action, experience, ability and positive feedback. It relates to specific tasks or situations. Example: Feeling confident in public speaking or problem solving.

  • Self-esteem

As a definition refers to the overall sense of self-worth. It is influenced by self-acceptance, self-love and self-compassion. It affects the way we perceive ourselves in general. Example: Feeling worthy of love, respect and happiness.

Simply put, Self-Confidence is related to competence, while Self-Esteem involves our fundamental sense of worth.

Sources to strengthening self-confidence

  • Self-acceptance - Embracing and accepting who you are by recognizing your value. Avoid comparing yourself to others. Remember that everyone is on their unique journey, and life isn’t a competition.
  • Positive Experiences - Past successes boost self-confidence. When people achieve success—whether it’s acing a test, completing a project, or receiving recognition for their work—they experience a sense of accomplishment. Step out of your comfort zone. Each small victory builds confidence.
  • Positive self-talk - Cultivating an optimistic internal dialogue and self-kindness. Challenge negative thoughts. Replace them with affirmations and constructive statements.
  • Supportive Relationships - Encouragement from others plays a key role. When people are supported by those who believe in them and provide encouragement, they tend to cultivate a positive self-image and feel empowered to tackle fresh challenges.
  • Resilience - Recovering from setbacks boosts self-confidence. When people confront obstacles directly, they build inner strength and determination. With each difficulty they navigate, their confidence in overcoming future challenges grows.
  • Continuous Learning - Acquiring new skills and knowledge enhances self-confidence. As people participate in activities that broaden their knowledge and abilities, they gain confidence and competence.
  • Self care - Taking care of your body through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate rest can boost confidence. Managing stress, practicing mindfulness, and expressing emotions constructively contribute to self-confidence.
  • Setting boundaries - When you establish boundaries, you educate others on how you want to be treated. This clarity strengthens your self-concept, shifting your focus from others’ opinions to your own preferences.
