Understanding Security Clearance

Whilst on your job search, you may have come across some roles which require you, as the candidate, to have security clearance.

You may be asking how do I go about getting this?

Well, we’re here to help…

Security clearance is a vetting process which once certified, an individual can be trusted with access to sensitive information.

For UK security clearance it’s required for the individual to go through background checks and examinations of their records. The most common examples of security cleared workers are those in the armed forces, intelligence agencies and government.

So how can I get security cleared?

You must already be in the process of getting a job that required one, you cannot apply and get one as a sole individual. Your security clearance will be requested by your potential employer and can take anywhere up to 6 weeks to be completed.

Some of the checks involved with becoming security cleared include:

? Criminal record check - Both spent and unspent convictions

? Credit and financial history - A detailed review of your financial stability

? MI5 record check - Screening for any security concerns

? Company records check - Verification of your employment history with previous employers

And many others….

Once you’ve obtained your SC clearance, it’s government policy to have it reviewed after 10 years. If you were to move on from this role, you can transfer your security clearance to your next workplace.
