Understanding Responsibility and Leadership

One of the most overlooked aspects of effective leadership is the willingness to accept responsibility. Yet experience has shown that being responsible is one of the most critical characteristics of effective leaders. In many ways, leaders that willingly accept responsibility can be the glue that can take an average team and develop them into a dynamic high-performance team.

Having observed and witnessed the good, bad, and ugly of leadership, the concept of responsibility and leadership has intrigued me for many years. It actually led to the development of a simple, yet powerful leadership model called Responsible Leadership.

The Responsible Leadership Model is based on four principles:

1. Leaders are responsible for developing a foundation built on clarifying PURPOSE and VALUES. They are also responsible for setting the tone when it comes to ATTITUDE.

2. The next responsibility for the leader is to accept full responsibility for themselves. They’re also responsible for setting the expectation that every associate is also expected to be responsible for their own actions and results.

3. Leaders are also responsible for developing a culture of cooperation and collaboration.

4. The fourth responsibility is creating a culture that promotes accountability and results.

Over the next four weeks, we will take a look at this model in more detail focusing on one responsibility each week, starting with the foundation – clarifying Purpose, Values, and Attitude.

One last thing about this model, Responsible Leadership can be used in several ways:

- As a troubleshooting tool

- As a teaching tool

- As a leadership guide for achieving sustainable success
