UAE has issued Anti-discrimination/Anti-Hatered Law Federal Decree Law No. 2 of 2015 on Combating Discrimination and Hatred, which aims to protect everyone residing in the UAE and thus bring the concept of social security to a new level. The law aims to fight discrimination against individuals or groups based on religion, caste, doctrine, race, colour, or ethnic origin.

?Understanding Workplace Harassment and Bullying:

Workplace harassment and bullying encompass a range of unwanted behaviours that create a hostile or intimidating environment for employees. These behaviours may manifest as verbal, physical, or psychological abuse and can be based on various factors such as gender, race, age, or personal characteristics.

Common Forms:

?Verbal Harassment:

Verbal abuse includes insults, offensive jokes, slurs, yelling, threats, or unwelcome comments about an individual's race, religion, gender, or other protected characteristics.

Physical Harassment:

Physical bullying involves any form of physical harm or intimidation, such as pushing, hitting, or unwanted physical contact.

Cyberbullying:

With the rise of technology, cyberbullying has become a significant concern. It includes harassment through emails, messages, or social media platforms.

Discrimination:

Discrimination involves treating someone unfairly due to their characteristics, such as nationality, age, gender, or disability.

Isolation:

Social exclusion or isolation from work-related activities can also be a form of bullying, impacting an individual's emotional well-being.

?Impact on Individuals and the Workplace:

Workplace harassment and bullying can result in severe consequences for both individuals and organizations. Victims may experience stress, anxiety, depression, and a decline in overall well-being. The work environment may suffer from decreased morale, productivity, and increased turnover rates.

How to Respond Effectively:

?Seek Support:

Don't hesitate to seek support from the HSE/Wellbeing Team, colleagues, and friends. Discussing your experiences with someone you trust can provide emotional support and guidance on how to handle the situation.

Report the incident:

If you experience or witness harassment, report it to the appropriate channels within the organization. This may involve speaking with the HSE/Wellbeing Team, HR representative, or following the designated reporting process outlined in company policies.

Be Ethical:

It’s important to be honest and fair while reporting all types of harassment and not to take advantage of the laws and policies for personal reasons, as integrity and principles are core values that build trust within organizations.

Encourage open communication.

Foster an environment where employees feel comfortable reporting incidents of harassment. Establish clear communication channels and ensure confidentiality to protect those who come forward.

Prompt Investigation and Action:

When a complaint is raised, the HSE/ Wellbeing Team needs to promptly investigate the matter and take appropriate action. Ensure that all parties involved are treated fairly and that corrective measures are implemented.

Support Systems:

Establish support systems for victims, including counselling services and resources, to help them cope with the emotional toll of harassment. Demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all employees.

Be Ethical:

It’s important to be honest and fair while reporting all types of harassment and not to take advantage of the laws and policies for personal reasons, as integrity and principles are core values that build trust within organizations.
