Understanding the Removal of Google's Crawl Rate Limiter Tool

Google's Decision: Deprecating the Crawl Rate Limiter Tool

Google has recently announced the deprecation of the crawl rate limiter legacy tool within Google Search Console, effective January 8, 2024. This decision follows Google's assertion that the tool no longer holds significant utility, citing improvements in its crawling logic and the availability of other enhanced publisher tools.

What Was the Crawl Rate Limiter?

The crawl rate limiter was a feature within the legacy version of Google Search Console, allowing website owners to regulate Google's site crawling frequency. Google traditionally advised against limiting the crawl rate unless specific server load issues arose due to Googlebot activity.

Why Google is Removing It

According to Google's Gary Illyes, advancements in crawling logic and other available publisher tools have rendered the crawl rate limiter obsolete. Googlebot now adjusts its crawling speed based on server responses, slowing down in the face of HTTP errors or prolonged response times.

Impact of the Change

With the deprecation of the crawl limiter tool, Google plans to set the minimum crawling speed at a lower rate, mirroring the previous crawl rate limits. This move aims to honor past settings by site owners while efficiently managing bandwidth when search interest is low.

Handling Crawl Issues

Website owners facing crawling issues can refer to Google's help documentation and utilize the provided report form to communicate problems directly.

Why This Matters

For users accustomed to utilizing the crawl rate tool, its upcoming removal warrants attention. It's advisable to monitor its impact on server performance once the feature is discontinued.

Google's decision to retire the crawl rate limiter tool reflects their dedication to improving search experiences. ?? Embrace these changes to refine your website's performance and adapt to evolving algorithms. Stay informed and use available resources to keep your online presence strong in the ever-changing digital landscape.

I use this tool and it will probably mean I have to buy more bandwidth to deal with the unnecessary crawling by Google. Removing things just to make a UI cleaner (which is what has been said elsewhere) is a stupid reason to remove something.
