Understanding that Rejection is Protection...!

"Rejection is Protection"

...or 're-direction'.

For many, rejection is a pain trigger.

And yes, at first, many will read this phrase incorrectly as they will not be able to process.

Re-read the above again.

As professionals, we often dread rejection. We fear it as though it is the ultimate sign of failure, inadequacy or incompetence. We are afraid that being rejected might damage our self-esteem or ruin our chances of success. However, what if I told you that rejection could actually be a good thing? What if I told you that rejection can serve as a form of protection in your career?

Here are three reasons why rejection is protection in your career:

1.Rejection Leads to Better Opportunities

  • The first way that rejection can be protection in your career is that it often leads to better opportunities.
  • When we are rejected from a job, a promotion, or a project, we tend to view it as a failure. However, this is not always the case.
  • Rejection can actually be a blessing in disguise, leading us to better and more fitting opportunities.

For example, let's say you applied for a job, but the company ultimately decided to go with another candidate.

While it may sting at first, that rejection can open up new doors for you. Perhaps it will force you to look for other job opportunities, which could lead you to a position that is a better fit for your skills and career goals.

2.Rejection Helps You Develop Resilience

  • Another way that rejection can be protection in your career is that it helps you develop resilience.
  • Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and challenges. In the workplace, resilience is an essential trait to have.
  • Rejection can be tough, but if you can learn to handle it well, you will become more resilient.
  • You will learn to take rejection in stride, view it as a learning opportunity, and move forward.
  • In turn, this will help you build a stronger sense of self and a more positive mindset.

3.Rejection Helps You Learn and Grow

Finally, rejection can be protection in your career because it helps you learn and grow.

  • When we are rejected, we are forced to take a step back and evaluate what went wrong.
  • We can use that feedback to improve ourselves, our skills, and our work.

For example, let's say you presented a proposal to your team, but it was rejected.

Instead of getting discouraged, take the opportunity to gather feedback and learn from it. This can help you refine your ideas and ultimately create better work.

Conclusion

Rejection can be a form of protection in your career. It can lead you to better opportunities, help you develop resilience, and help you learn and grow. So, the next time you are faced with rejection, try to reframe it in a positive light. View it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and ultimately protect your career.

Rejection protects you from an 'entitlement mentality', allowing us to quickly realize that only our egos may take a slight bruising, however, accepting that the rewards of rejection provide progressive and key lessons to us all.

Good point. However, every now and then rejection can arise from bad faith or biases on the other side, which means there is no systematic reason to step back and assess what went wrong on our end. If it's necessary to be self-critical to learn and grow, it's equally necessary to be self-confident to move forward.

The same goes for treating failure as an experiment, not an experience.
