Understanding Radiator Valves in Transformers: A Comprehensive FAQ Guide
In the complex world of power transformers, the importance of efficient cooling cannot be overstated. Radiator valves are crucial in maintaining optimal performance, yet their functions and specifications often must be understood. Whether you're a seasoned professional in the industry or just embarking on your journey into the field, this comprehensive FAQ guide will shed light on the intricacies of radiator valves. From their essential functions to leakproof designs and various sizing options, we'll explore everything you need to know about these crucial components.
Q1: What is a radiator valve for transformers?
A: Radiator valves are essential components in power transformers. They are designed to control the flow of coolant (often oil) between the transformer and its radiator. These valves allow for the easy isolation of the radiator for maintenance or replacement without interrupting the transformer's operation.
Q2: What is the function of a radiator valve in a transformer?
A: A radiator valve's primary function is to regulate the flow of transformer oil from the transformer to its radiator. By controlling the flow of this coolant, the valve contributes to the efficient cooling and overall performance of the transformer.
Q3: How does a radiator valve work in a transformer?
A: When the transformer operates and generates heat, the radiator valve opens to allow transformer oil to flow from the main tank into the radiators. This helps in dissipating the heat from the transformer oil to the environment. When the transformer is not operating or during maintenance, the valve can be closed to isolate the radiator.
Q4: What are the different sizes of Radiator Valves available?
The radiator valves are generally available in 50, 80, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mm bore sizes.
Q5: Are there any Indian Standards for Radiator Valves?
Currently, there is no Indian Standard for radiator valves, and it is mainly manufactured as per widely accepted industry standards.

Q6: Are radiator valves leakproof?
Radiator valves manufactured in India have metal-to-metal contact between the flap and the body. Due to this, up to 6 drops per minute are expected from the flap in the closed condition. However, we generally strive to keep it below 2-3 drops per minute.
Q7: Are there leakproof radiator valves?
Yes, leakproof valves can be manufactured on special request with special rubber sealings.
Q8: When should gun metal bodies be used in radiator valves?
Generally, the body of the radiator valves is made of cast iron painted to prevent rust. In exceptional cases where valves are to be used in a highly corrosive atmosphere or for some reason, it is not advisable to use a CI body. Gun Metal valves may be used. However, careful commercial consideration should be given because gun metal body valves are almost 10x more costly than standard radiator valves.
Q9: If the spindle of the valve breaks, can it be repaired on-site?
The spindle is riveted to the flap of the valve. If, for some reason, the spindle breaks, it cannot be replaced on-site. The only option is to replace the damaged valve with a new one.
