Understanding and Preventing Monkeypox: What You Need to Know

Monkeypox, once largely confined to Africa, has now become a global concern. As the virus spreads across various countries, understanding its transmission, prevention, and treatment is more critical than ever.

What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family. Although it resembles smallpox, it is generally less severe. The virus is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa.

How is Monkeypox Transmitted?

Monkeypox can be transmitted through several routes:

  • Direct Contact with Infected Animals: Transmission can occur through bites, scratches, or consumption of undercooked meat from infected wild animals such as rats or primates.
  • Human-to-Human Contact: The virus can spread through close personal or sexual contact, involving body fluids, sores, or respiratory droplets from an infected person.
  • Contaminated Objects: Items such as beds, clothing, or surfaces that have been in contact with the virus can pose a risk.

Current Prevention and Treatment

While there is no definitive cure for monkeypox, some treatments used for smallpox, like tecovirimat and cidofovir, may offer potential benefits. However, prevention remains the most effective strategy:

  1. Vaccination: The JYNNEOS vaccine, which is not yet available in India, is recommended for preventing monkeypox. It is most effective when both doses are received four weeks apart.
  2. Avoiding Contact: Steer clear of wild animals in areas where monkeypox is endemic and ensure that animal products are thoroughly cooked.
  3. Human-to-Human Prevention: Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms of monkeypox, practice good hand hygiene, and use protective clothing or masks when caring for those infected.
  4. Sanitation: Regularly sanitize potentially infected environments and items to curb the spread of the virus.

Common Symptoms

Monkeypox manifests through:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Rash (initially on the face, then spreading)
  • Lesions (progressing from bumps to pustules)

Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Wear a mask if in contact with an infected person
  • Isolate yourself if showing symptoms
  • Seek medical care if exposed

Don’ts:

  • Avoid close contact with infected individuals or animals
  • Don’t share personal items such as clothes or bedding
  • Avoid touching rash or lesions
  • Avoid intimate contact with multiple or new partners

Treatment and Support

Supportive care, including rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications, can help manage symptoms. In severe cases, antivirals like Tecovirimat (Tpoxx) may be prescribed.
