In the latest Coffee Connect episode, we dived into the fascinating world of chiropractic and energy healing. The guest speaker, Tanya English, D.C. , a chiropractor and energy healer, shared her unique journey and insights into how our bodies and minds work together to maintain health
A Journey from Theater to Healing
The speaker began by recounting her unconventional path to becoming a chiropractor. Starting in theater production, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts but soon found her true passion in massage therapy. This led her to work in chiropractic offices, where she decided to take the plunge and become a chiropractor herself. She moved from the East Coast to Iowa, the birthplace of chiropractic, to pursue her dream at Palmer College.
The Basics of Chiropractic Philosophy
She explained the core philosophy of chiropractic care: it's all about ensuring the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Chiropractors don't add or take away anything; they simply remove interference so the body can function properly. This interference is often caused by bones moving out of place, pressing on nerves, and disrupting the nervous system's communication.
What Causes Interference?
The speaker highlighted four main causes of these disruptions: toxins, trauma, thoughts, and timing. While Palmer College teaches about toxins, trauma, and thoughts, she discovered the importance of timing on her own. If muscles are pulling bones out of place, understanding the timing of these movements is crucial.
Understanding the Nervous System
A quick anatomy lesson revealed that our nervous system has three parts. One part is controlled by our conscious thoughts, like deciding to move our hand. Another part, the autonomic nervous system, manages everything else automatically. Interestingly, the autonomic nervous system is influenced by our feelings. How we feel deeply affects how our bodies function.
The Power of Acknowledging Feelings
The speaker emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring our feelings. By doing so, we can release negative emotions and keep positive ones, helping our bodies stay in balance. She shared that patterns of physiology, like how we walk or drive, can become automatic over time. However, intense or chronic emotions can cause these patterns to become stuck, affecting our physical health.
Patterns and Physiology
She gave an example: when driving to the store, most of us think about our shopping list, not the act of driving. This is because driving has become a subconscious pattern. Similarly, our bodies can hold onto patterns of fear or stress, which can disrupt our health.
Fight or Flight vs. Rest and Digest
The discussion moved to the fight or flight response—a part of our autonomic nervous system. When we’re in danger, our bodies react quickly, but there's no natural “brake” to stop this response. This ongoing state of stress can negatively impact our health if not managed properly.
Conclusion
The Coffee Connect episode was an eye-opener, showing how our thoughts and feelings are intricately linked to our physical health. By understanding and addressing these connections, we can better manage our well-being. This session left us with a deeper appreciation for the holistic approach to health and the incredible potential of chiropractic and energy healing.
