Understanding and Overcoming Overwhelm

Overwhelm is something we all encounter, whether from an overpacked schedule, emotional stress, or the relentless demands of daily life. We've all experienced those days when the to-do list seems endless, our minds are racing, and we feel like we're stuck on a never-ending hamster wheel. Just last week, I walked in the door after a long day and burst into tears. That was overwhelm. My to-do list was overflowing, I felt frustrated, and I had reached a temporary breaking point. A few deep breaths later, I regained control, but the underlying problem remained, I had simply put a band-aid over it.

What is Overwhelm?

Overwhelm occurs when too many tasks, concerns, or emotions pull at us from all directions, leaving us stuck and unable to move forward. It’s like trying to juggle too many balls - eventually, they all start to drop.

That day, I felt exactly like that - pushed and pulled in too many directions. But it wasn’t just that day, it was an accumulation of too many days like that. Unfinished tasks, unanswered questions, and unresolved issues cluttered my thoughts and drained my energy. The more open loops I had, the more overwhelmed I became, making even small tasks feel insurmountable.

The Impact of Overwhelm

Overwhelm isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s an energy drain. When we're overwhelmed, our brain’s emotional processing centre, the amygdala, goes into overdrive, triggering our fight-or-flight response. This makes everything seem more threatening than it really is, impairing our ability to think clearly or make decisions.

Overwhelm also increases cortisol levels, the body’s stress hormone. While a little cortisol can help us tackle challenges, too much impairs cognitive functions like memory, concentration, and decision-making. This was exactly what I was experiencing - stress piled on stress, making me less capable of handling it.

Practical Strategies to Conquer Overwhelm

So, how do we stop overwhelm in its tracks? The key is to recognise it early and take deliberate steps before it spirals out of control.

  1. Acknowledge It: The first step is acknowledging that we're feeling overwhelmed. Many people push through, hoping the feeling will pass. Instead, pause and recognise what's happening. This allows us to step back and evaluate our situation objectively.
  2. Prioritise and Break It Down: Once we acknowledge the overwhelm, it’s time to prioritise. Ask yourself, "What are the top three things I need to get done today?" Focus on these tasks first, breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps. This not only makes the tasks less daunting but also gives us a sense of accomplishment as we check them off.
  3. Set Boundaries: One major contributor to overwhelm is saying "yes" to everything and everyone. Learn to set boundaries and protect your time. Saying "no" is not only okay - it’s necessary for your mental health. Remember, your time and energy are valuable; guard them.
  4. Practice Self-Care: Overwhelm takes a toll on our wellbeing, so it’s essential to practice self-care. This doesn’t have to be complicated - take a walk, meditate, or set aside a few moments each day to relax. Self-care helps recharge your resilience.
  5. Shift Your Mindset: Overwhelm often stems from a mindset of scarcity and frustration. Combat this by flipping the script. Focus on abundance, opportunity, and the positives in your life. This change in perspective can help you handle challenges with a clearer mind and a calmer approach.

Final Thoughts

Overwhelm is a temporary state that we can manage with the right tools and mindset. By acknowledging it, prioritising tasks, setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and shifting our mindset, we can regain control and prevent overwhelm from dictating our actions.

Remember, you are stronger and more capable than you realise. Every step you take toward overcoming overwhelm is a step toward a more balanced, fulfilling life. Don’t let overwhelm steal your peace—address it, manage it, and move forward with confidence.
