Why would employers be biased against hiring more experienced, knowledgeable employees?
You've got over 20 years of experience in a job function or industry, or a combination of many skills developed working in multiple functions/industries. Why don't employers want this?
Here's where understand the employer's point of view is critical to your success, especially when you're age 40+.
Employers do want your experience - they want your ability to solve problems, industry knowledge, and technical know-how.
... But they don't want to overpay for it.
When you're over 40, employers expect that you seek higher compensation than less experienced competitors. You probably are faced with similar decisions in your own life, weighing whether to purchase a product that's more expensive than others. If you can't clearly see the additional value that product will provide, you're probably uncomfortable paying more for it.
Employers feel the same way about you. Few employers are straight out biased against age. Instead, they don't want to pay more for a new hire, unless they can clearly see the additional impact they'll get from a more expensive candidate.
Unfortunately, if you're like almost all other job seekers, you haven't learned how to demonstrate that you're worth it. Maybe you think that you are ... but as a national recruiter, I review hundreds of resumes each day and almost no job seekers communicate this effectively in resumes and interviews. On good days, I see one or two ... often I see none who effectively communicate impact.
Outplacement and most career coaches/authors don't teach this ... instead teaching you to communicate your responsibilities/experience, at the expense of demonstrating the impact you’ve made. Certified professional resume writers were trained the same way, so they also fail to demonstrate impact in the resumes they write.
And when you fail to demonstrate impact clearly to employers, you undersell yourself. Employers who don't see your how you’ll improve their operations feel they would overpay for your services, compared to a younger, less expensive candidate.
Good thing there are far more effective ways to get interviews, advance in those interviews, beat ageism, and land a great job fast when you're age 40+.
