Understanding Others: The Key to Leading Well

In leadership, being kind and understanding helps others follow you better. Brian Browne Walker talks about this in the I Ching, saying, "Being gentle and understanding makes people want to follow you without even knowing why." This means if you can truly understand where your team members are coming from, you can know how to help them do their best work. But how do you learn to understand others??

First, you need to listen carefully. Sometimes, even smart and open-minded people can't see things from another person's point of view. So, you need to listen not just to their words, but also to what they might be feeling inside, even if they don't say it.?

Next, it's important to show that you understand and respect others, even when you don't agree with them. We all feel the same basic emotions, like happiness, sadness, or anger, and we all need love and respect. So, even if someone disagrees with you, try to see them as a person who needs kindness and respect just like you.?

When you have a disagreement with someone, think about why you're talking to them. Do you want to prove you're right, or do you want to find a solution? Wanting to punish someone or show that you're better than them is not a good way to lead. Leaders should be thinking about how they can help others, not how they can win arguments.?

Lastly, try to put aside your own thoughts for a moment and really try to understand how the other person is feeling. This doesn't mean you have to change your mind, but it's important to see things from their point of view. By doing this, you can build better relationships and make your team stronger.?

In summary, being kind and understanding is really important in leadership. By listening well, showing respect even when you disagree, thinking about others' feelings, and trying to understand their perspective, you can be a better leader. Let's all work on being more understanding and kind to make our teams and organizations better places to be.?
