Understanding Methods for Offshore Pipeline Deployment

Pipeline deployment in offshore environments involves a handful of methods: Shore pull is a straightforward technique where the pipeline is pulled using winches. This method is suitable for short pipelines in shallow water due to its simplicity and lower cost. However, its applicability is limited in terms of pipeline length and diameter.

In contrast, lay barge stinger deployment utilizes a specialized pipelay barge equipped with a stinger. The stinger is a structure extending from the barge's stern that supports and guides the pipeline as it is laid into the water. This method offers greater flexibility and enables the installation of longer and larger pipelines. However, it is a more complex and expensive approach compared to shore pulls.

When it comes to specific considerations for pipeline deployment methods, several factors come into play. The length of the pipeline is a crucial aspect. Shore pull is typically suitable for pipelines under 10 kilometers, while lay barge stinger can handle pipelines up to 100 kilometers in length. Similarly, the diameter of the pipeline is a determining factor. Shore pull is generally limited to pipelines with diameters less than 24 inches, whereas lay barge stinger can accommodate pipelines up to 48 inches in diameter.

Water depth is another significant consideration. Shore pull is typically feasible in water depths of less than 100 meters, whereas lay barge stinger can be used for water depths up to 1,000 meters. Additionally, cost plays a vital role. Shore pull is often the more cost-effective option, while lay barge stinger offers greater flexibility but at a higher cost.

In pipeline deployment projects, Unique Group's Seaflex lifting bags have gained recognition for their valuable assistance. These bags are not only used for deploying pipelines through shore pull or lay barge stinger methods but also serve in pipeline lifting from the seabed during above-water tie-ins (AWTIs) and repair and retrieval activities.

During AWTIs, the Seaflex bags are positioned onto the pipeline by divers. They are then inflated using airlines from the surface. Controlling the ascent rate is crucial to ensure a safe operation without the risk of the bags surfacing too quickly. At the end of AWTIs, the Inflatable Buoyancy Units (IBUs) can aid in repositioning the pipeline onto the seabed. As the IBUs descend, the compressed air inside can be replenished using surface airlines. Once the IBUs reach the seabed, they can be vented and released by divers, allowing them to float to the surface for retrieval.

Unique Group's Seaflex offers a range of buoyancy bags suitable for various applications, whether it's supporting subsea tools or assisting in pipeline deployment and retrieval operations. With their expertise in project engineering and guidance, Unique Group ensures the manufacturing, testing, and certification of safe and reliable products.
