Memory helps these agents to communicate better, making sure that conversations are continuous and relevant. This article will discuss why memory is needed for AI agents, explain the different types of memory they use, show how these memory systems work, and cover some important points to think about for making it all work.
Understanding Why Memory Matters for AI Agents
Memory is really important for AI agents, and here’s why:
Keeping Conversations Going: When AI remembers what we talked about before, it makes chatting smoother. This way, they keep everything relevant.
Getting Useful Information: Memory helps AI pull up info from earlier chats or from other sources, so they can give better answers.
Doing Tasks Better: With memory, AI can remember steps or things they’ve learned before, making them more effective at handling complicated tasks.

In simple terms, why is memory needed in LLM and AI agents?
Imagine you’re chatting with an AI chatbot, like the ones you may use for homework help or just to talk to. When you chat with a person, they usually remember what you said before. This helps them understand you better and respond in a good way. Now,?LLM (Large Language Model) memory?is like giving the AI that same ability. It helps the AI remember past talks and information, making its answers more useful and relevant. Without memory, an LLM is like someone who forgets everything you just told them.
Think about it like trying to solve a math problem without remembering the formula, or chatting without recalling what the other person said – that would be really hard! That's why memory is crucial for AI agents.
Types of Memory
Short-Term Memory (STM) / Working Memory
STM temporarily holds immediate context and recent interactions. This is essential to keep the agent on track during a single conversation or task.
Think of this as your brain's scratchpad or the short-term memory you utilize to hold a phone number just long enough to dial it. For LLMs and AI agents, it typically pertains to the?immediate context of the conversation.?The LLM has a limited capacity to "see" the recent conversation, known as its?context window.?If the dialogue extends too much, the LLM may begin to "forget" previous segments.
Implementation: STM is facilitated by the LLM’s context window and conversation buffers. LangGraph manages STM in an agent’s state, while CrewAI uses RAG with Chroma for effective processing.
Long-Term Memory (LTM)
LTM is a persistent repository for storing task-specific details and learned knowledge that can be recalled across interactions.
This is like your brain's long-term storage, where you keep important facts, experiences, and skills. For AI agents, this is about remembering information across different conversations or over a longer period. There are different types of long-term memory for AI agents too.
Subtypes:
It's kind of like recalling particular events or experiences you've gone through. For an AI, it would mean remembering a past chat with a certain user,?like what clicked and what?didn't.
It's a bit like recalling general facts, you know? Like how Paris is the capital of France.?For an AI, this just means all the info it has about the world or details about what a user likes.
It's kinda like remembering how to do stuff, you know? Like riding a bike or whipping up a recipe.?For an AI, it's basically its playbook for how to act, use tools, or make choices.
Implementation: Different storage options handle LTM well. For example, you can use relational databases like CrewAI or vector databases like Zep and Mem0. Tools like LangMem also help memory managers get memories and change them. CrewAI uses SQLite3 to keep track of task results.
