Understanding "Insider Threats"

An insider threat arises from individuals within the organization who pose a security risk. This can include current or former employees, board members, or anyone who has previously had access to the company's premises or sensitive information. Insider threats are particularly challenging to mitigate, and your vigilance is essential in maintaining the security of our network. Here are some guidelines to help protect our organization.

Tips to Help Prevent Insider Threats:

  • Report Suspicious Behavior: Keep an eye out for unusual actions by employees, contractors, or anyone else in the building. If you notice something out of the ordinary, inform your manager immediately.
  • Maintain a Clean Desk Policy: Ensure no confidential information is left out in the open.
  • Secure Confidential Documents: Always store sensitive documents in a locked filing cabinet when not in use. Avoid writing passwords on sticky notes.
  • Lock Your Computer: Always lock your computer when stepping away, even briefly. This prevents anyone from viewing confidential information on your screen.
  • Beware of Shoulder Surfing: Be cautious of individuals lingering around your desk, looking at your screen or items on your desk. They might be trying to gather confidential information or observe you entering passwords.

Remember, you play a crucial role in defending our organization against potential cyber attacks....Pause, Observe, and Consider. Stay vigilant!
