The Ingress Protection (IP) rating is an internationally recognized standard (IEC 60529) that classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by electrical enclosures against the intrusion of solids (like dust) and liquids (like water). It is often used to specify the environmental protection of products such as electronic devices, outdoor equipment, and lighting fixtures.
The IP rating is typically represented by "IP" followed by two digits (e.g., IP67), with each digit indicating a specific level of protection.
Breakdown of the IP Rating Digits
Kindly refer to the IP ratings table above.
Common IP Ratings and Their Applications
Solids: Protected from solid objects larger than 12.5 mm.
Liquids: No protection.
Application: Indoor electrical outlets and power strips.
Solids: Protection from objects larger than 1 mm.
Liquids: Protection from splashing water.
Application: Outdoor lighting, bathroom fittings.
Solids: Limited dust ingress (dust-protected).
Liquids: Protection from water splashes.
Application: Light fixtures in dusty or humid environments.
Solids: Complete dust protection.
Liquids: Protection from low-pressure water jets.
Application: Outdoor electrical enclosures, garden lighting.

Solids: Dust-tight.
Liquids: Protection from immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
Application: Smartphones, rugged outdoor cameras, wearables.
Solids: Dust-tight.
Liquids: Continuous immersion in water beyond 1 meter (typically defined by the manufacturer).
Application: Professional underwater equipment, high-end smartphones.
Solids: Dust-tight.
Liquids: High-pressure, high-temperature water jets.
Application: Car washes, industrial machinery, food processing equipment.
How to Interpret an IP Code
For example, if a device is rated IP67:
If the rating is IPX5, the "X" indicates that the level of protection against solids is not specified, while 5 indicates protection against low-pressure water jets.
Additional Letters (Optional)
Sometimes, IP ratings include additional letters that provide further information about the product's resistance to specific conditions:
Conclusion
IP ratings offer crucial information about how well a product can resist dust, dirt, and moisture, making them essential for selecting devices intended for specific environments. The higher the numbers, the better the protection, making IP ratings key to choosing suitable outdoor, industrial, or marine equipment.
Make smarter choices for your tech by checking the IP rating!
