Understanding the importance of protein

"Connor, I can't eat that much protein, I heard it's bad for my kidneys. And besides that, your body can only absorb a certain amount anyway, right"?

I have heard this over and over and over again over the past 11 years in the field of health and fitness.

So let's put it to rest.

All meta-analyses done over the years have only suggested that those with severe kidney disease should attempt to minimize protein intake.

Protein intake does not need to be high. Just like you don't need to go to the gym, get up early in the morning, or choose good whole food over junk.

However, if you want to improve your body composition and health, optimal protein intake should be met on a daily basis.

It will help to build lean muscle tissue, mitigate muscle loss or wastage, and massively curb appetite and it's vital for your immune system.

Why would you not want to have a higher protein intake?

You have a pre-existing kidney condition.

So, how much protein should you aim for?

If that sounds like gibberish, all the more reason to seek out advice to set you on the right path ??

What about the hierarchy of importance? You may have heard the most important time of day to consume protein is after your workout..

Although it is important, it's not nearly as important as your overall daily intake.

My advice is to track your protein intake for a couple of days using a tracking app such as MyFitnessPal.

It will tell you exactly how much protein you are getting onboard. If you are undershooting the recommendations, you can simply add protein sources to the meals that are lacking.
