Understanding a Healthy Gut

Gut Health Awareness: Understanding Gut Permeability

Our gut health matters more than we realize. I always heard this when I didn't understand it, so I didn't put much emphasis on my own gut health. We don't know what we don't know...

As I studied the complex systems of the body, I learned why?gut permeability is a critical factor in overall well-being.

Image 1, below highlights the mucosal barriers which serves as our body’s frontline defense against external threats. The mucosal barrier lines the gastrointestinal tract, separating the inside of our body from the external environment.

Image 1: The barrier covers a vast surface area (approximately 400 square meters) and plays a critical role in health and disease.

The junctions that line the barrier are the key components of the mucosal barrier. They tightly seal the cell-to-cell junctions between epithelial cells. See image 2 of the tight junctions between cells. Think of this as a protective wall.

Image 2: You can see the healthy epithelial cells and closed junctions. There are functional lab markers that can identify the level of permeability in the gut.

What Is Gut Permeability??

Gut permeability refers to how easily substances pass through our intestinal lining. When compromised, it leads to health issues. We so often ignore the way our body signals us to alert us that something is wrong. These "alerts" are unwanted health symptoms. See image 3.

  • Bloating: Feeling full or swollen after meals.
  • Food Sensitivities: Reacting negatively to certain foods.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness.

I want to explain what this means. If you aren't absorbing nutrients, your body will go into a reserve causing reactions that will lead to disease. Many diseases will result, and many are never diagnosed because we either "push through it", or self medicate.

Image 3: Here you can see what intestinal permeability looks like. The junctions are spread apart and opened. This allows an open door for unwanted bacteria. It also destroys your body's ability to absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat.

What Causes Gut Permeability:

We definitely know and understand how to improve the health of our gut. As a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist, I can not emphasize the importance of diet. I have designed programs to guide my clients through the steps toward a healthier gut. Here are a few things that are included in the protocol

  1. Eliminate processed foods, alcohol, sugar and artificial sugars. Eat a balanced diet rich with fiber and low in preservatives.
  2. Since stress affects gut health. It is important to include stress-reduction activities throughout the day and include supplements to support stress and calm.
  3. It is known that some infections damage the intestinal barrier. Antibiotics, while life-saving, can significantly impact our gut health. The gut contains a diverse community of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes. A healthy microbiome is associated with high species diversity. However, antibiotic use can reduce overall gut flora diversity by disrupting the balance between different species.
  4. Inflammation is when undigested particles leak into the bloodstream, causing chronic reaction. This inflammatory effect will compromise your gut flora population. Reduce this response with anti inflammatory foods!

We know the immune system can often attack healthy tissues. 80% of our immune system resides in the gut. Without proper gut health, we become susceptible to infections, inflammation, and autoimmune responses.

Now that you understand the basics, let's discuss some tips to create a healthy environment for your microbiome. A happy gut will lead to a happy life!

??Add probiotics and prebiotics to support beneficial gut bacteria.

? Omit sugars, foods high in preservatives and artificial sugars.

??Incorporate fiber-rich foods to nourish gut microbes.

??Stay hydrated which is essential for gut function.

? Optimize your sleep to help your body "rest and digest" as it should.
