Understanding the various aspects of attention, and how we use attention to learn and interact is key to optimizing experiences for learning and social interactions.

Starting with an age-appropriate understanding of what attention should look like at each stage of development can help parents and professionals identify when attentional abilities are on track, and when immature attention may be the result of gaps in development, creating unnecessary complications in life.?

It is also important to understand what contributes to the development and usage of attention, to help set kids, teens, and adults up for success with optimized attention.

Age-appropriate development is one of the strongest predictors of the ability to direct and sustain attention. A child, teen, or adult with measurable gaps in development will often also experience a noticeable gap or deficit in attention.?

Attention naturally expands overtime in sync with matured development.Children’s attention should improve as they grow, from a few minutes in toddlers to longer periods in older kids. Knowing what's typical for their age helps parents set realistic expectations and create a nurturing environment.?

For instance, a four-year-old might only focus for about eight to twelve minutes, while a ten-year-old can manage twenty to thirty minutes. Clear guidelines help parents adjust their activities and conversations to match their child's capacity, fostering a more harmonious home life.?

You can think of the ability to direct and sustain attention on a specific task as the “Window of Attention.”

Understanding how long children can concentrate is key to supporting their development and easing parental worries. Everyone has their natural attention window. The window of attention is the duration of time you can sustain focus without becoming distracted or requiring redirection. It is important to note the attentional window will vary if it is a task you enjoy, versus a required task such as math homework. Our window of attention for tasks we find interesting, easy, or enjoyable is naturally larger, as it requires less energy and effort, and is more rewarding. The more critical window of attention to gauge and monitor is the duration of time on non-enjoyable, but required tasks.?

To determine your child’s current window of attention, subtly time them from the moment they are focused and engaged on a task, to when they begin to become fidgety, distracted, or even irritable. It is ideal to measure this at a time when they are well rested, well fed, in a good mood, and attempting a task they need to do often, such as homework, or even cleaning their room.

This is their baseline attention, but this does not mean this is the level of attention they will be able to utilize all the time. Understanding the factors that help to improve attention over time, and those that chip away at the window of attention is key to help you set your student up for attention success (see the list below for more information).?

Why Practicing Attention is Not Enough

Strengthening a muscle is simple,? the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Improving attention is just not that easy. If practice alone was enough to maximize attention, we would all be attention superstars since we practice attention everyday at school and work. The reality is that even with daily practice, far too many people still find directing and sustaining attention to accomplish a goal challenging.??

Think of attention as the culmination of many separate skills and functions. Our ability to process sensory input, block out distractions, and control impulses all contribute to our attentional success.

You can watch the teacher, but if you can’t block out the noise of the students talking next to you, you can’t pay attention to what the teacher is saying.?

You can watch the board, but if your eyes jump to the movement of the bird flying by the classroom window, you are no longer tracking what the teacher is demonstrating.?

If you are listening to a conversation between friends, but can’t process all of the words being said, you can miss key aspects of the conversation.

Attention requires accurate sensory processing so the brain can take in, process, and appropriately respond to the information. It requires the complex maturity to override the impulse for the eyes or ears to shift to movement or sound, and the ability to stay on task, even when that task is challenging.?

Simply put, developmental gaps in sensory processing, coordination, or regulation result in developmental gaps in your window of attention.?

Just like a camera needs to focus to take a clear picture, our brains need to focus to learn and understand new information.

  • Understand lessons better: They process what they learn in a more meaningful way.
  • Complete tasks more efficiently: Less time is wasted on distractions, which means more gets done.

This means there's a maximum amount of time someone can stay focused on a task before they become distracted, yet all too often the task required of a student may require a larger window of attentional focus than the child can achieve. Understanding how to successfully push into the upper limit of attention can not only help to expand attention but can contribute to successful completion of tasks, with fewer upsets for everyone!

We reviewed in this article that the window of attention should increase with a student’s age and development. For example, a toddler may only focus for a few minutes, while a teenager might focus for up to an hour. This upper limit increases with age and development.

  • Young children (3-5 years old): They can focus for about 5-20 minutes.
  • School-aged children (6-12 years old): Their attention span ranges from 20-45 minutes.
  • Teenagers and adults: They can often focus for up to an hour or more.

Once a student has surpassed their current window of attention it does not mean that the work needs to end, but that the student will require more support to continue to be productive. There are several ways to extend the window of attention, or to push into the upper limit of attention to complete a task.

  • Take a brain break: Spend 3-5 minutes spiking the heart rate and engaging the muscles, this burst of exercise provides the brain a burst of energy. Once the student has caught their breath, sit back down and get back to work. You can not expect to repeat the full window of attention a second time, but this can provide several additional minutes of sustained attention!
  • Fuel the brain: Providing the brain a healthy snack that includes protein, carbohydrates and/or healthy fats refuels the brain to provide extra endurance for focus. Allow roughly 20 minutes for the fuel to kick in, then return to the task that needs to be completed.?
  • Remove all distractions: Blocking out sound, noise, and interruptions requires energy from the brain. By removing all distractions will allow the brain more energy to direct to the task at hand.?
  • Provide support: If your student has surpassed their window of attention, working with them can help to extend their engagement. This does not mean you do the work for them, but with them. You can read the material to them or prompt them to problem solve. Knowing they are not alone can help a student push through a challenging assignment.?

Remember that it's not just age that affects attention span. Activities also play a role. A child might focus longer on a fun game than on homework. Remember that just because they can do something they love for longer, does not mean you should have the same expectations for homework!?
