Business development encompasses a broad spectrum of activities aimed at growing a business. Within this framework, marketing and sales teams play critical roles, each with its distinct functions yet intertwined goals.
Marketing: The Art of Attraction and Nurture
The marketing team's primary role is to identify and attract potential customers through strategic storytelling and targeted campaigns. This begins with creating detailed customer profiles for each target segment, incorporating a unique story brand guide tailored to various industry types and roles within those industries. For example, in the church industry, profiles for a mission's pastor, lead pastor, and youth pastor might be developed, focusing on their decision-making criteria, aspirational identities, functional needs, and concerns.
By sourcing leads through detailed online research, marketing efforts fill the CRM with valuable information, including contact details, websites, and specific pain points. Marketing campaigns, both over email and social media, are then tailored to nurture these leads by establishing the organization as knowledgeable experts and addressing the specific needs of different roles within target industries.
Sales and Customer Success: The Science of Conversion and Retention
Once marketing has successfully attracted and nurtured leads, the sales team takes over to convert these leads into customers. The process begins with sales meetings that leverage CRM data to tailor conversations, highlight product benefits relevant to the client's needs, and demonstrate how the product aligns with their organizational objectives. This personalized approach is critical in developing project proposals that resonate with potential clients, showcasing the product's capabilities and how it addresses their specific functional needs.
After successfully closing the deal, the account is handed over to the account management and customer service team. This team is responsible for onboarding, setting KPIs, and scheduling regular meetings to ensure the product meets the client's expectations and addresses any issues that arise.
