Understanding the First Amendment to EN 50126+A1:2024 Standards

On November 30, 2024, the first amendment (A1) to the EN 50126-1:2017 and EN 50126-2:2017 standards was officially published. These updates, now referred to as EN 50126-1:2017/A1:2024 and EN 50126-2:2017/A1:2024, introduce adjustments to terminology, references, and annexes while keeping the core requirements unchanged.

This amendment was prepared by the Technical Committee CLC/TC 9X, which focuses on electrical and electronic applications for railways. Below, I’ve summarized the key changes and their implications.

Key Updates in this Amendment

  1. Terminology Refinements Replaced the term "EN 50126" with "this document" throughout the text to ensure consistency.
  2. Normative References Updated to align with the latest international standards, including: IEC 60050-821:2017, IEC 60050-902:2013 and IEC 60050-192:2015.
  3. Series Referencing The term "EN 50126 series" now replaces "EN 50126-1 and EN 50126-2" in applicable contexts to unify references.
  4. Annex ZZ Revised to reflect alignment with the updated EU Directive (EU) 2016/797, superseding the older EU Directive 2008/57/EC.
  5. Bibliography Updates Incorporated new resources from the European Union Railway Agency, such as: Reference Document Database (RDD) – Part 2 – National Reference Documents (NRDs). Single Rule Database (SRD).

Implications for the Industry

Importantly, this amendment introduces no changes to the technical requirements of EN 50126-1:2017 or EN 50126-2:2017. It primarily focuses on enhancing clarity, ensuring consistency with the latest EU directives, and updating references to reflect current standards.

This amendment also signals the gradual transition from BS EN 50126-2:2017, which is set to be withdrawn by November 30, 2027.

Conclusion

While the changes in this first amendment are minor, they reflect the ongoing effort to refine and align standards with the evolving regulatory and technological landscape of the railway industry. Adopting these updates ensures continued compliance and alignment with best practices.
