Understanding Empathy

Dear Son,
Empathy is a powerful trait that allows us to connect deeply with others. In a world where self-interest often takes precedence, understanding and sharing the feelings of others can set you apart as a man of genuine compassion and strength. Empathy is not about being weak; it's about having the strength to understand and support those around you.
This is where I will most likely differ from everything you hear from the rest of the world. Empathy does not mean charity. Our stance as a family needs to be to empathize with people's situations and understanding that life is not fair, but there is always a pathway to a better situation. So, we help people help themselves. It is the old adage, "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime." The rest of the world will want to just help with no long-term goal in mind. Be the one that inspires change and don't just be a supplier of band-aids.
Empathy helps you build meaningful relationships and creates a supportive environment for everyone involved. It's a sign of true strength and character to put yourself in someone else's shoes and genuinely care about their well-being and their family's.

In a society that often values self-promotion and individual success, remember that being empathetic is a mark of true masculinity - however it can be crippling if you promote, vote for, and desire free things. It demonstrates that you are secure enough in yourself to care for and support those around you and help them help themselves.
My hope for you is that you cultivate empathy in your daily life. Listen actively, understand deeply, and offer support, guidance, and motivation to those who need it. By doing so, you'll become a man of character and build meaningful relationships and a reputation of the rock in a world of pebbles.
Love,
Dad
