Dyspraxia, also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), can significantly affect various aspects of daily life. New research from the University of Surrey reveals that DCD has a more profound impact on adult math performance than previously thought, shedding light on how cognitive factors such as working memory and emotional influences like math anxiety come into play.
What is DCD?
Dyspraxia (DCD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects approximately 5% of the population. It is characterized by difficulties in fine and gross motor coordination, often identified in childhood but persisting into adulthood. These coordination challenges can affect everyday tasks, from balance and sports to more academic activities like learning math or driving. Despite its prevalence, DCD remains under-recognized, especially in adults.
At Clear Conscience Counseling, we frequently observe how conditions like DCD can manifest beyond childhood and extend their influence into adult life, impacting both personal and professional spheres.
Math Performance and DCD
A key finding from the University of Surrey's research focuses on the impact of DCD on math performance. While earlier studies have examined how children with DCD tend to struggle with math compared to their neurotypical peers, this is the first study to explore its effect on adult math skills. For many adults with DCD, basic math tasks—once thought to be automatic—require significant cognitive effort, mainly because they rely heavily on working memory.
Dr. Anna-Stiina Wallinheimo, the study’s lead author and a Research Fellow in Cognitive Psychology, highlights that adults with DCD often demonstrate lower working memory capacity and higher math anxiety. When asked to complete simple mental arithmetic tasks in a timed environment, adults with DCD were not only slower but less accurate than their neurotypical counterparts.
"This reliance on working memory, even for basic tasks, suggests that adults with DCD have to exert more cognitive effort," explains Dr. Wallinheimo. "Their lack of automation in processing numerical tasks places an additional burden on their cognitive system, leading to slower performance and more errors."
The Role of Math Anxiety
Another significant discovery in the study is the emotional factor—math anxiety. Adults with DCD reported significantly higher levels of math anxiety than those without the condition. This anxiety can create a negative feedback loop, where fear of making mistakes further impacts performance, reducing self-confidence and reinforcing avoidance of mathematical tasks.

At Clear Conscience Counseling, we understand that emotional well-being is deeply intertwined with cognitive performance. By acknowledging how anxiety, particularly around math, influences daily functioning, we can create more holistic treatment plans that address both cognitive and emotional challenges.
Implications for Cognitive and Educational Support
The research conducted by the University of Surrey brings valuable insights into the unique needs of adults with DCD. Dr. Judith Gentle, Senior Lecturer in Psychology and co-author of the study, emphasizes the importance of specialized educational approaches to support this population. She advocates for tailored interventions that go beyond conventional learning strategies and accommodate the reliance on working memory and the influence of math anxiety.
"Our findings advocate for a more nuanced view of cognitive support," says Dr. Gentle. "Educators and therapists must move beyond traditional methods and focus on personalized support to help adults with DCD manage their cognitive and emotional challenges."
