Understanding Dopamine: The Pathway to Joy and Growth

In our post-covid world, where work & life is back to becoming fast-paced, I find myself speaking to many about how the pursuit of happiness and personal growth often feels like an endless journey. As someone who is deeply committed to development and lifelong learning, I have found myself drawn to the science of dopamine and how it holds the key to unlocking joy and motivation. I find my joy in seeing others fulfilled, and I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact that understanding dopamine can have on our lives.

Through my work as a coach and mentor, I've seen individuals light up with enthusiasm and purpose when they realise how dopamine can influence their mindset and drive their success. In this article, I’ll explore the science behind this remarkable neurotransmitter and how it can help us cultivate a growth mindset, find happiness in the little moments, and ultimately lead a more rewarding life.

So firstly, what is dopamine?

Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) in the brain that plays a crucial role in the brain’s reward system, influencing both our emotion and cognitive processes. It impacts many functions in the body, including motivation, mood, attention, and memory. (1) Understanding it’s function can open pathways to greater joy, motivation, and a growth mindset in both our personal and professional lives.?

How does dopamine spark joy and happiness??

Dopamine is often referred to as the “feel-good” chemical because it contributes to feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. It helps us experience joy through the following:

  • Reward system – when we achieve something pleasurable, like completing a task or enjoying a delicious meal, dopamine is released, reinforcing behaviours that lead to positive outcomes.
  • Motivations – dopamine drives us to pursue goals and rewards, keeping us motivated and engaged. It encourages us to strive for more, fueling our ambitions.
  • Emotional wellbeing – a balance level of this chemical supports emotional stability, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety, and promoting overall happiness.

What happens when you are just overwhelmed by a task, or feel crippled by workload and are not sure where to start, and you are lacking in motivation? We need to mindfully activate the reward system by saying, “the friction I am feeling here is…”

Whatever the difficult task, think about what the overall purpose is and how it will keep you on track. As conceptual as it sounds, this is what releases dopamine and helps with energy and persistence. Then, when we start putting in the effort, and there is some friction, you secrete adrenaline (which is reactive), which can become tiring over time. Dopamine buffers the adrenaline. (3)?

By saying to ourselves, “I am on the right track and am taking steps to reach my milestone”, then we are activating the reward mechanism and putting dopamine into our system.?

Our mindset plays a huge part in sparking the joy and happiness that we crave. It’s dopamine’s ability to reward us for achieving goals and maintaining our emotional well-being and is linked to its role in fostering a growth mindset.?

Let’s explore this relationship more closely.?

Dopamine’s relationship with a growth mindset?

A growth mindset is the belief that our abilities and our intelligence can be developed with effort and perseverance. It’s the understanding that intelligence can be developed which makes us want to learn. (2)?

It is essential for our personal and professional development and dopamine plays a significant role in cultivating this mindset through:

  • Learning and adaptation – when involved in learning processes, it helps us adapt to new challenges by reinforcing positive outcomes and encouraging us to embrace mistakes as learning opportunities.
  • Goal achievement – by rewarding progress and effort, it reinforces our belief that improvement is possible, fostering resilience and perseverance.
  • Innovation and creativity – a dopamine rich environment can stimulate creativity and innovation by encouraging exploration and experimentation.?

In a?growth mindset response,?we can take on challenge-seeking and be more resilient as we engage in thoughts and actions that can lead us towards our goals. The effort is the path to mastery and failure helps learn along the way. (3)?

Now, let’s discover why dopamine is important in life and work??

When we harness the power of this ‘feel-good’ chemical it can lead to a more fulfilling and productive life. Now, I’m not talking about mindless Instagram scrolling, a weekend Netflix binge, playing computer games all night, and overindulgent eating. Although these acts can be fulfilling, they are not productive. We are using our brain’s capacity on the wrong thing at that moment.?

And yes, in this new social-media saturated world, we are all guilty of most of them!?

When harnessed correctly, dopamine can:

  • Enhance productivity: through its motivational properties, we can boost productivity and efficiency in the workplace, leading to greater job satisfaction.
  • Improve our relationships: by using positive reinforcement we can enhance our interactions with others, fostering empathy and cooperation.
  • Provide personal growth: by embracing a dopamine-driven growth mindset allowing us to continuously improve and evolve, leading to personal fulfillment and success.?

As I’ve shared how this impressive chemical works in various ways, how do we increase our levels, particularly when mental health continues to be a world pandemic.?

Here are some practical tips to boost your dopamine levels.?

  1. Set achievable goals: Break tasks into smaller, manageable parts to experience regular dopamine releases as you accomplish each step.
  2. Celebrate success: Acknowledge and celebrate both small and big achievements to reinforce positive behaviours.
  3. Stay active: Regular physical activity boosts dopamine levels and enhances our mood, even more so in natural environments. ?
  4. Consume nutritious food: The nutrients in certain foods such as fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, and foods rich in omega-3 almonds, avocados, bananas, cheese, yoghurt, chicken & turkey travel to the bran and contribute to dopamine production.
  5. Cultivate curiosity: Engage in new experiences and learning opportunities to stimulate dopamine production.?

We have uncovered that dopamine is more than just a chemical in our brains. It’s a powerful influencer or our mood, motivation, and mindset. By understanding and leveraging its effects, we can cultivate joy and foster a growth mindset, if we harness its power correctly!?
