Understanding Dementia & Innovative Solutions

Did you know that 1 in 3 people will develop dementia in their lifetime? If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve experienced the impact of dementia first hand through a loved one. Dementia is not just about memory loss; it’s a journey that affects families in profound ways. Jodi Sanders, General Manager at Ravencourt, shares her personal story about her grandfather’s battle with dementia:

"My grandad was diagnosed with dementia in 2011. At the time, I had no idea what it would mean for our family, especially for my nan. In the early stages, it was mostly small moments of forgetfulness. He’d forget my name, but then quickly realise who I was. My grandad was a fit, active man who used to play professional football. He was known for his Nike trainers and tracksuit, always out walking or running.

One day, I was walking home from work and found him wandering the streets, looking lost. When I approached him, he didn’t recognise me or know where he lived, and he asked for his mum. That was the first time I truly felt fear and concern for him.

But I soon learned that he was still my grandad, and what he needed most was our love and support. My children were young at the time, and I often noticed him enjoying their toys. It was as if he were young again, learning and playing. He would remember the toys he played with and adored my son, who was four at the time, and our dog, Bluebell. Oddly, he remembered their names better than mine. When he had them for company, he was calm, engaged, and his joy was infectious."

The Role of Sensory Stimulation in Dementia Care

Jodi’s experience highlights something crucial: while dementia affects memory and cognition, there are ways to maintain meaningful connections. Research has shown that sensory stimulation can significantly benefit individuals with dementia. By engaging multiple senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—sensory products can help in various ways:

  • Improving Cognitive Function: Stimulating the senses can maintain or improve memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Reducing Emotional Distress: Sensory experiences can alleviate anxiety, agitation, and depression, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.
  • Enhancing Social Interaction: Sensory activities foster communication and engagement, creating opportunities for connection.

At Ravencourt, we offer a range of sensory products designed to meet the individual needs of those living with dementia. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for individuals and families navigating the complexities of dementia. We work alongside researchers, designers, and innovators to create products that provide comfort and connection.

HUG by Laugh: A Groundbreaking Comfort Solution

One of these ground-breaking products is HUG by Laugh, developed from research led by Professor Cathy Treadaway at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Collaborating with over 70 organisations, including Alzheimer’s Society and the NHS, the HUG was created to provide comfort and companionship.

With its long, weighted limbs designed to mimic the sensation of a hug and a realistic heartbeat inside its soft body, HUG offers soothing physical contact. If the heartbeat isn’t preferred, it can be switched to play a user’s favourite music instead. One customer review captures just how much of a difference this product can make:

"My mum has always loved music, and coming from a family that gives hugs, the HUG was the perfect birthday gift. She’s had dementia for a few years now and can no longer communicate beyond facial expressions. We loaded her favourite songs into the HUG’s drive box, and her reaction was heartwarming! The staff at her care home were amazed at how relaxed and happy she became. She lays her head on the HUG, closes her eyes, and smiles while listening to the music she loves. Knowing she has this comfort when I can’t be there gives me so much peace."

Ageless Innovation’s Robotic Pets: Companionship for Older Adults

In 2015, Ageless Innovation, a team at Hasbro, recognised the need for meaningful engagement for older adults and created Joy for All robotic pets. These lifelike pets provide companionship, joy, and even help ease feelings of isolation and cognitive decline. The pets have had a profound impact on individuals with dementia and their caregivers.

One caregiver shared:

"I bought the robotic cat for my mum, who has mixed dementia, and her reaction was priceless. She thinks the cat is real and it has brought her so much joy. It’s been one of the best things we’ve ever gotten for her—such a fantastic invention!"

The testimonials are a testament to how much these products can improve the lives of those living with dementia. From reducing feelings of loneliness to sparking moments of joy, sensory products like HUG and robotic pets create a lasting positive impact.

Raising Awareness and Embracing Innovation

Sadly, Jodi’s grandad passed away before he had the chance to experience these incredible innovations, but Jodi knows he would have loved them. Products like HUG and robotic pets offer companionship, comfort, and a renewed sense of purpose to those who need it most.

As dementia affects more and more families, it’s essential that we work together to raise awareness and explore the latest technologies that can improve the lives of individuals living with this condition. Whether through sensory stimulation, innovative products, or simply spending time with loved ones, we can make a difference in how we support those with dementia.

At Ravencourt, we are committed to providing products that bring comfort, joy, and connection to families navigating dementia. Let’s continue to advocate for better care and embrace the incredible potential of these innovations.

Together, we can make life brighter for those living with dementia and their families.
